High Idle 2k Rpms need help!!!!

1998 4runner 6cly 218k miles

How it began:

Cleaned MAF (K&N) took apart sprayed with air house and MAF cleaner to clean.
I put it back together, pump the gas a few times while on and it just kept the high idle after.

What I did after to try to fix:
Cleaned Throttle body: didn't fix
Cleaned IACV: didn't fix
Checked Vacuum lines by eye: found nothing.
Checked throttle cables and nothing was tugging.
Checked to see if the throttle body had any clearance around the butterfly (seemed tight barley any light seeping thru wen held up) thought about the washer trick.


any ideas? my next thought is thermostat. also to note that when installing K&N intake I tugged the cruise control pretty good but I re-situated it and it isn't pulling the butterfly open. any ideas??????????????????? cruises at 15mph with foot off the gas once I get going.:redbrick::redbrick::redbrick:

I am in the same situation although only idles at 1.4k. Havent gone through the whole list yet nothing has worked yet.

You cleaned with air? as in compressed air?

The thin strands of wire in MAF's are VERY VERY delicate. You must take care when cleaning not to damage it.

A new-used maf is only $35 if it does turn out to be the fault.

Sounds like that's really the only thing it could be unless some random coincidence just so happens to be popping up now and is to blame.

Id swap with a known good one and see if that fixes the high idle.

Try taking a look at your TB plate. Some wear can occur resulting in the plate no longer properly sealing after removing the carbon from the TB plate when cleaning. If that's the case, easy fix.

Oh? For my '97 SR5 this item is nearly $800.00 !!

Maybe I was looking at the wrong part, but for $800.00 or more I'll just leave it be. Truck has 93K miles.

I'm not about to try and clean it either...everyone says how delicate this part is. Just not about to take any chances....or am I not understanding things correctly???

I had the same problem last year. At start up it would rev to 1400 rpm then eventually drop down to normal. I pulled the ICV and cleaned it. worked fine for about 7 months then came back, so I replaced it as it was starting to give me issues again. you might need a new one?

IF you cleaned the IAC while still on the throttle body, it's still dirty. The "valve" inside of it probably is stuck and full of crud. You have to remove the IAC from the TB to clean it properly. Use some TB cleaner and a few pipe cleaners to get the junk out of it. You will see the open and shut "valve" inside the IAC. Once you get it clean enough so that the valve opens and closes easily, your idle will return to normal shortly.
