High Mileage '01 Pricing

So it's been about six years since I've owned a 3rd gen and it's very likely that I'm going to be getting back into one shortly. I recently came across an '01 that looks to be fairly clean and maintained but it has 210k miles on it, the price they have listed is $5800. The highest mileage I had on mine was 140k but beyond the normal stuff for these (axle seals, TB/WP, Rad/Trans cooler, starter) is there going to be a lot I'm looking at maintenance wise at this mileage. I'm not afraid to get dirty anymore but I also don't want a money pit. Also, what is your opinion on that price?

Given the upgrades, I'd say that price is a steal if there's nothing seriously wrong with it. Being in Ohio, I'd look closely underneath it for the extent of rust. I get the feeling looking at it that the thing was loved on. That a dealership is only asking $5800 makes me suspicious, so definitely have an independent mechanic look it over *thoroughly*. I'm also curious what's going on with that coolant hose...looks like it's sucked itself inward, I have no idea what that might mean.

But if it checks out, I'd have no hesitation about a high mileage truck. Almost bought one a year ago with 225k on it, except the owner changed his mind about selling it. We're friends now and work on our trucks together.

~ I have same model about to hit 200K miles ~ I would suggest asking for owner's repair file and base decision on that. IMO ~ all of the repairs to date I've faced (owner since 60K miles) were normal maintenance and/or wear/tear ~ see the sticky section on 3rd gen as the list of issues runs extremely true. I've replaced gasket cover & seals for a second time ~ this is known issue with the 2000 ~ otherwise my repair list to date: water pump, shocks/struts, rear seal, gasket cover valves@ 165K miles & fuel filter, gasket cover & valves, ball joints @ 199,747 miles. Hope that helps!
 
mines got 230 and is still running strong, its sitting on a stock suspension and tires though, but i wouldn't think the mileage would be of concern as long as everything else checks out
 
Seems like a pretty good deal for the $. Yes odd about the upper coolant hose. All i can think that would do that is the radiator cap not letting the recovery tank coolant back into the main system.

I would drive it, for a good while and see what i feels like - should still feel virtually like new, listen for noises, drive over some bumps/rocks to listen to suspension and of course get underneath it to inspect. But it looks pretty nice for the bucks being asked, you can probably get them to know off $500-700 more if you don't grin ear to ear too much! (drive it and come back shaking your head!) Luck!
 
Yeah I agree with the above posters. I paid $6200 for mine with 180K miles two years ago. Hasn't given me any real problems. I'm now at 215K
 
Thanks for all the responses, I went to take a look at it tonight and unfortunately the best way to describe it is as a turd. It was unbelievably rusty, had a really bad gear/diff whine (2nd one i've actually looked at that had it), and was very unstable to drive. The coolant hose was sucked flat by vacuum, as soon as I took the rad cap off it sprang back to life (maybe bad cap or plugged expansion tank hose)

Is there a price any of you would buy this at?

From what I have read it is very rare for the diff to fail but the CV needle bearings can seize and make a similar noise?

I'm debating whether to consider it if they would be willing to part with it for cheap, the dealer did tell me he knew nothing about it, they hadn't really driven it and there wasn't a lot of traffic wanting to look at it.

Offer 4500, I believe that would be somewhat fair, doesnt seem like it would need much work, heck offer 4k and come up from that. How rusty is it underneath? Check behind those fender flares and make sure there is no rust, reach behind them or something. if you dont feel comfortable just dont buy it.
 
it kind of depends on where you live as to what price should be right. i live in georgia and just picked up a 2001 limited 4wd with 215k miles on it last week for $4800. it was a 1 owner (elderly couple) with all service records. they had already done some of the big service work like timing belt, water pump & catalytic converter within the past 50,000 miles. it's not perfect on the interior, but i knew it hadn't been wheeled by some punk kid either. offer low and see what they say! by the way, if you think about it, the average miles per year on a vehicle is between 15-20k. so a 2001 with over 200k miles on it really isn't high mileage...
 
thats a great point gotee, that means my 4runner is just under 13k a year having 203k on the clock and its a 98. thanks for bringing that up!!!
 
Been pondering this away all day long. The rust is the worst in the couple pics I posted, underbody rust gets significantly better in front of the rear axle save for a few individual bits around the brakes. The lift kit looks like the toytec ultimate with bilsteins. It actually rode very well, firm but not overly harsh.

I'm most concerned with why the rear end felt so loose, there was not a feeling of stability at all while cornering, the back end, in a sense, just felt like it was gonna take off it its own direction. I know lifting changes a bit but I felt a little nervous driving, is that normal with the toytec? I know alignment can effect that but the front end felt fine and the rear is a solid axle with no adjustment?
 
Looks like quite a bit of rust. Maybe I'm picky but I once bought a car at a steal due to some rust and a check engine light. Even after I fixed the CEL, the rust was worse and worse the more I looked into it and it made me regret my move.
