High RPM Shift 2nd to 3rd Gear (Automatic)

It seems since the weather has gotten colder that my Runner has started having a difficult time shifting at the right time.

It happens every morning on the first time it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear. It reaches about 2700 RPM before shifting, where it usually shifts around 2000 for the rest of the gears. After the first time it won't do it again until the next morning.

Has anyone experienced anything similar to this?

Has the engine warmed up when it's waiting to shift? Mine does that if it's cold out, and my guess is that it's just trying to heat itself up faster. Though I do admit I haven't noticed it doing this in the past, exact same thing you described.

Same exact thing happens to my '00 on cold mornings. If i dont let it warm up for a few minutes it will do this if i just fire it up and hit the road.

I think it has to do with getting the transmission warmed up. I remember my '00 silverado would do the same thing and it also wouldnt shift into overdrive until the transmission fluid reached like 80 degrees or something. That was only when it was 40 degrees or under tho.

That was kind of my thought, that the engine maybe just wasn't warm enough. I don't remember it happening much in the Summer months.

It is about 40 in the mornings right now. I am parked in the garage over night, and probably only let it warm up for about a minute before hitting the road...

This has been discussed many times in previous threads. The truck is trying to warm up the transmission fluid. All 4runners do this along with many other vehicles. If you let your truck sit and warm up to temp before driving it, you will notice it does not do this.
