High speed driving with cold engine?

Seeing as how I am only 2 blocks from a freeway, does it hurt to drive at 60 or so with an engine that is still warming up? I can be doing 70+ with the temp gauge just off the cold peg.

I do note some missing until the temp gets to normal, but the CEL does not light.

Is this bad? I really don't want to sit and idle for a few minutes until the engine temp is at normal.

Thanks!

You'll lose some gas mileage until it goes into closed loop mode but probably no more than you would letting it warm. Oil takes milliseconds longer to get to the valves but once it's there they're ok. Might not be the best for oil pump but it'll survive.

Closed loop occurs in about 60 seconds on these trucks, Ive checked.

As long as you wait about 30 seconds for oil to begin circulating to the top end you should be ok. I would run synthetic oil too, it reaches low viscosity faster from cold start. :)

Just drive it relatively nice until you are fully warmed up.

I am easy on the gas until fully warmed up, but I think I'll just drive the side streets at 30 mph to the next on ramp and then hi ball :).

Besides, driving 55 or so in a 65 zone is asking for trouble around here, where most are doing 75 or so ...

i see your in mesa, i dont recon it gets below 30 on its coldest night when i used to live there.

i didnt start warming up my truck until it got below 30 ish but i wouldnt mind still just jumping in it and getting on the freeway.

good honest question you posted, id say your fine, no need to warm it up.

as an added tip. switch everything to synthetic fluids. it makes a world of difference in those cold mornings. (below 0 for sure!)

If you get a Scanguage 2, you'll have an actual[water] temperature in degrees Fahrenheit to obsess over. I've got about 2 blocks to the freeway on ramp; if it's at 100ºF by then I'm pretty happy.

Ted,
I live 2 hrs north of you. 15 miles up 87 past Long Valley Café. Driving a 98 runner. I just run synthetic oil and start it up 5 min before I leave. Oh it is snowing here right now.

Hey Mark,

Keep that white fungus up there! Being from Upper Michigan I certainly do not miss that stuff or the cold that goes with it :)
