hit a deer

I started my drive across the country on thursday, made 2300 miles with no problems whatsoever, and 200 miles from my destination, 2 deers make a run for freedom. I slammed on my brakes, and hit one probably at 40mph. I pulled over, and immediately ran to the front of my car to check the damage. One effed up license plate, and the black grill on the bumper is cracked... thats all I saw, as I covered the entire bumper with painters tape for easy bug cleanup and rock chips. But, everything else seemed solid. By the time I saw the crack, the deer was already getting up and stumbling into the tree line, which was unfortunate because I wanted nothing more than to stab that deer in the heart for what it did to my bumper.

Just kind of worried, is there anything else I should be looking to check out? Any potential issue?

Glad you're ok and it's minimal damage. Be thankful that thing didn't slide up the hood and through the windshield... When you think about that the bumper thing becomes small and more ok.

I'd call insurance in the morning while it's all super fresh in your brain.

Got one this morning on the way to work.I was probably 3 miles from home, looked to be a six point or so.Turned around,went back home............NO BODY WORK! Looks like the bumper and fog light took the beating,even got a 8" hole in the bumper cowling that happened when he put his head down.I swerved to the left thinking maybe he would stop, he didn't.Oh yeah,I almost forgot the impact broke one of the DEER ALERTS off too!!!

I used them for years, and no, they don't work.

My uncle hit one and the antlers pierced through his radiator, leaving him stranded.

The best way to avoid damage is to use a brush guard. Or, avoid driving during dawn/dusk.

Oh Simple I'm so sorry!
If it makes you feel any better, welcome to the club. Ruffian got her first bad off roading damage over the weekend too. We did the Barney Riley trail, and OMG....it's rated easy. Oh hell no. Remember Strawberry? Remember what the rocks looked like when we turned around? I did a good 5 miles of trail JUST like that, the other 5 was easy. Nothing major, well, that rock sliders won't replace! There goes those nice running boards...oh well. I'll get pics over to the off roading thread one day.

I hit a deer last night. I was responding to a fire call (vol. firefighter) at about 1.30am. As I a made a left turn I was confronted by 3 deer just standing on the road. Two of them bolted but one just froze and stared wide eyed at me until he/she ended up underneath my front diff. Since I had just turned a corner I was only doing about 20 mph so it wasn't a big hit at all, but I did have to reverse off the deer, after which the sob got up and ran off!
I have an ARB bullbar so as you might expect, not even a scratch. I do have a fire dept front license plate and it was bent back into the winch opening, but that was easy to bend back into shape.
Anyway simple, I'm sure your ride is fine other than the damage you found. Glad to see you didn't swerve and hit a tree instead.

let my parents use the runner to go to Minn. for a week and dad hit a deer. pushed in the left fog light and cracked the bumper right by the light .not really noticeable because everyone i show they ask where the damage is. the stealership wanted $549 to fix it and i had to remove the brush guard .
