Hitch Cover, Protecting?

So do people see protection value in covers or purely aesthetic or function in other ways (steps etc.). Since our hitch covers are open on the inboard side, would the covers actually provide any protections from water ingress?

Curious people thoughts before I continue buying these as each one gets stolen...

It looks nicer than that hole. I think some people make a hitch cover that you can put a locking pin through. That way it can't disappear.

Sucks you live somewhere that you can't keep one of those covers without getting it stolen. I have one on a truck for 6 years (front hitch) and one on my runner for 3 years with no problem.
