well im going to attempt this, gonna buy one of those cheap harbor freight fold-able shop cranes and swap a 2002 3.4 for my 97 with a blown head gasket.
I've read here about the differences in motors and gonna tackle it.
question: where do I grab this thing to lift, are there rings or brackets or something I need to buy?

I've researched and asked that question before and never got an answer. It's either super simple & I'm overthinking how to hook the lift straps to the engine or anybody that has actually lifted an engine never saw my post. I know some engines actually have lift points built in to the engine. I'm either blind and over looked the lift brackets on my 4runner's engine or they're not there & has to be done some other way.

Any bolt into something solid through a chain... Exhaust manifold bolts, alternator bracket bolts, etc... I don't think the 3.4 has a dedicated lifting point.

I used the motor mounts and just wrapped a chain through them and then bolted it at the top. I didn't have any issues removing or reinstalling it that way.

I slipped one link over the lift hook and the other over a bolt I put into an unused hole in the block.

I don't have one of those lift hooks....but thanks for the photo, I didn't even think to bring it in from the side, is that typical?

Probably not. I wasn't actually pulling the engine, just supporting it and the trans/TC while I pulled the frame out from underneath and replaced it with a new(er) one. So it had to be from the side. The boom would have to be much lower to pull it out, too.

I don't know how you could be missing that hook. I guess somebody got tired of it being in the way when they changed the #6 spark plug.

You could buy one for about $20: 17125-62041 - Genuine Toyota STAY, SURGE TANK

or grab one at a junkyard. I think you really might need it as it hangs on two bolts, and I would not want to support that engine on just one.

Toyota also sells the hanger for the passenger side p/n: 12282-62050. That comes separate from the truck, and there is no real need for it, but the drawing below shows the bolt hole I used for my chain hook.
