Need opinion about Home Alarms. DIY? ADT? Slomin?

With a DIY will you get monitoring service?


If you are going to get monitoring service than I would have the companies compete against each other. They may even have a deal where if you sign a contract for a certain length of time the alarm installation is free.

I've had three different companies and they are pretty much the same as far as I can tell so I would shop on price alone.

Most companies charge you for each false alarm. Some charge an additional increase for each false alarm. Ask the details before signing anything so that there are no surprises.

If someone breaks in and the local siren sounds (no monitoring), then the punks will most likely run away and try another home without an alarm. You can get stickers for your windows to warn off scrum-bags; even if you do not have monitoring.

IMO the best protective measure is a dog.

I have never been charged for a false alarm (which are pretty rare fore me) and I didn't know some companies do charge for false alarms. Advent is the company I use now. Locally though, the police departments are starting to talk about charging for responding to false alarms.

The alarm and the dog in my avatar provide a layered security aproach (oh yeah, and the Mossberg Persuader if all else fails)

We have a monitored ADT system with exterior cameras.

I always try to avoid bringing GFs home during day time. Too many eyes watching in our neighborhood. Many GMs.
