Honda and Nissan to Merge?! What Does This Mean for EVs and ICEs?

Recent news suggests that Honda and Nissan might be discussing a potential merger. Many speculate this bold move is tied to the rapid rise of electric vehicles (EVs). Some articles even claim that the merger could be a strategic effort to counter the growing dominance of EVs in the market.

As two iconic brands that have long been leaders in internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEs), this potential partnership has everyone talking. Is it a game-changing strategy to take on the EV market? Or is it simply a way to stay relevant in a rapidly changing industry?

Honda buys a competitor, which eliminates a few lost sales, takes advantage of what engineering positives this brings as well as manufacturing expansion, if needed, and eliminates a competitor for certain critical parts.

Honda can now make two things that it could not before:

1. True sports car platforms…RWD or RWD bias AWD sports car instead of basing everything on Accord platform and then adding SH-AWD.

2. True off-road SUV/truck…with 4LO and BOF design instead of Honda CRV or Pilot unibody with fancy off-road badges.

2.5. True heavy duty truck that can tow instead of Honda Pilot with rear top chopped off (aka Ridgeline).

The merger is nothing new in the industry, even in the USA. Think of AMC, created by merging Nash and Hudson: later gobbled up by Chrysler, Mercedes, and Stelantis.

Who knows what will stay, what will go, what will be shared under both badges (think Honda Passport/Isuzu Rodeo). Stay tuned.

As for my opinion of EV vs. ICE: for me, EV is promising but impractical. Several EV vehicles interest me, but the logistics of my owning one brings far too many compromises and inconveniences. Where I live, hybrid is the best ICE alternative.
