Houston/SE Tx/ SW La help thread

Hey guys, unless you live under a rock you know about what's going on with Harvey. Having helped my friends in Baton Rouge last August I know what these people are going through. We narrowly missed the effects of this storm in Lake Charles, La (eye passed over us early this morning).

I'll be heading to Houston/Beaumont area Saturday. Does anyone in the area need anything in particular or know of any specific needs of things/supplies I can bring other than the obvious stuff?

We have a crew of about 4-6 guys coming from my old church in Baton Rouge.

Let me know. We will probably be hooking up with a bigger group and begin helping gutting homes. No real set in stone its itinerary due to the changing conditions. Just showing up with a semi-strong back and weak mind.

Also, as weird as this may be, my wife has some frozen breast milk that she doesn't mind donating.

Good luck and be safe. One of my good friends from NC headed south with a pallet of water and food and a boat yesterday afternoon and just made it to Houston a little while ago.

That's great you are doing that....:rockon: I was in Katrina and know first hand what we wished we had...it was 8 days before we saw another living being...First Aid kits are a godsend....a small cut turned out to be a disaster...no fresh water too clean it or gauze to cover...rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide would have been the holy grail to have.....thanks again for doing this...!!!:thumb3:

Having lived through three major hurricanes and I am only 37, first aid supplies and water are paramount. Lots of isopropyl alcohol. Deodorant was also helpful.

Also all sizes of batteries, from AAA to 12v car batteries. Sterno to cook with, fuel for gas lanterns, towels and blankets from Walmart, short band radios, latex gloves.

Life won't be normal for these folks for months. Probably more like years.

Lots of people remember Katrina, but even more forget the strongest tropical cyclone ever to be recorded, Rita. I remember watching the radar in tv and telling someone, you see inside the eye there, that's where my house is.

I was 17 at the time and a senior in high school. It was 6 weeks before our school opened back up. Weeks without electricity. Not good.

I did meet my wife because of this storm, so that's a plus!

Gas is starting to disappear around the areas so I would advise bringing 2-3 full gas cans with you so as to ensure you can get around and get back out when the time comes. I have friends in Beaumont doing recoveries who are saying that the basics like mentioned earlier are needed. My in-law's missed getting heavy damage in Port O'Connor but he did advise if I get down there that a chainsaw would be great to have to help with cleanup.

Yea, I was thinking I need to fill up my gas tanks. My brother lives in Beaumont and works for Exxon Mobile as an engineer. Luckily his house didn't flood.
