How do I Increase My Fuel Efficiency

Ply refers to the 'layers' of material used in the tyre (think ply wood) More layers means more material which equals more mass. So a 10 ply tyre weighs more than a 6 ply therefore it takes more energy for the engine to turn the tire. Thereby using more petrol.

The spark plugs help with fuel efficiency because if they are working properly they are igniting the fuel better. Old, or dirty plugs dont ignite the fuel as well and can result in a loss of mpgs. Yes it is a good idea to replace spark plugs in an engine like changing the oil (except not nearly as often).

Just a word of caution if you consider switching to a lighter ply tires; this is a logical approach if you stay primarily on pavement but can cost you in the end if you spend some of your time off-road in the backcountry. Keep in mind the ply rating is a strength rating so the lower you go the more likely a rock, thorn or some other pointy/jagged thing you run into will cause permanent damage to your tire. Weight vs Strength; which is more important to you?

Good point. I got two rock punctures off roading 2 years ago during one trip, hence why I moved up to a 10 ply tire from a 6 ply.

Except for cleaning the air/fuel parts it's all how you drive it. For example my wifes v6 camry, she gets 27mpg combined. I drove it 60 miles yesterday through towns and some highway and got 34mpg. Hell I remember one time I got 24mpg for a whole tank on my V6 4runner but those days are gone. With mods I'm lucky to get 17mpg.

Hi Guys,

I have a '92 4Runner/ Surf with the 3VZ–E (3.0L V6) Engine & I'd like to know how i could make it more fuel efficient?
I've topped up all the regular fluids, and done a minor service (Oil + Oil Filter + Radiator Flush + New Coolant) and everything seems to be running smoothly.

I've herd changing the air filter can give you more performance - is that true?

I've also been told that if i install something after my air filter that will make my air 'vortex' and that i will get better fuel efficiency - is that true?

Are there any other ways i could make my truck more fuel efficient? (I've been told that fuel enhancers and magnets don't work)

Gut the interior of all unnecessary seating and material.
go on a diet
do a diesel swap
trade it in on or buy a second more fuel efficient vehicle
use the stock size road oriented tires if you don't have them and fill them up to the max air setting

If it's tuned up there is not much else you can do to make it much more fuel efficient except lose weight. It is what it is.

Remove the rear spoiler. Good for about 2-3 mpg on freeways. But don’t open that back window as much on the freeway. That spoiler actually blows wind at the window and when it’s open it creates back pressure so everything in ur 4skinner stays there. without it things could technically start getting blown out.

2004 4.0 4runner Fuel Mileage at 9 MPG NEED HELP

Im a long time Toyota nut and bought my 16 year old son a jacked up 2004 4.0 on 33s and the longer he has it the worse the fuel mileage. I realize its not going to get 18 MPG but its at about 9mpg now which is horrible. The fuel cap felt loose so I bought a new OEM cap and that didn't help. Any ideas? Engine sounds and runs great btw and no check engine lights on.
