How do my tires look?

I rotated my tires today and started noticing the cracking in the rubber. There is a distinct crack around the whole circumference of the tire, where the tread meets the sidewall. The place where it bends the most when it rolls I guess. :lmao:

How bad do they look? Or not bad at all? :pray:

They look pretty cruddy... I personally would not mess around with it and replace them.

they are cracked, but don't look terrible. I have seen worse. and in fact I think the tires on my 85 ARE worse.

that said, what is the date code? look for a 4 digit number on the tire, near the DOT number.

its only on one side of the tire, if you don't see it, it may be on the inner sidewall.

They are pretty old tires. More than 6 years that some people recommend changing tires at. But they only have 40k miles, were always loaded not even 50% of their maximum load, always properly inflated, and not used in a dry or hot climate. :nerd:

the 35's on my 85 were installed around 2001-02. so they are OLD also. but, like yours, they are cracked, but still have good tread. im going to continue using them until they give me issues.
 
If you can afford it, new tires is a great way to go...
If you are penny pinchin' S.O.B., I think they are fine to run for a while longer. It doesn't look like you're crushing mileage so I would say further extend your dollar to mile ratio... Don't you guys get snow and stuff in Nebraska? Ice and what not?
Do they still grip? Winter is best time for new tires

Statistically speaking, from what I've researched, the odds of being involved in a fatal accident where the true cause is blowout/tread separation are about the same as getting struck by lightning. And imagine how many craptacular vehicles are out there with underinflated tires that haven't even been looked at in a decade. :eek:

If my math is right, at 55mph a 32" tire spins at 600rpm. That's about 163g pulling away the tread. I never drive faster than that.

110mph will be 1200rpm, which equals 654g. Which is 4 times the G force. What if I spin the tires on a jack stand to 110mph and see if the tread flies off? If it doesn't I'm good at 55mph then. That's 4 times less Gs. :tongue1:
 
Look 100% fine to me, I'd keep running them till they gave me a real problem, or till they wear down more. They'll probably give you no problem at all though.
 
Get some new tires. There's a first gen Ford Exploder I see that has some BFG A/T's on it. However, they are not just any BFG all terrain's, they are BFG Radial All Terrain's. You know they have to be going back to the early 2000's at minimum for them to still say Radial.
 
Replace them puppies especially with the sidewall cracking
They are hard as rocks and will not grip the road well at all

Why are you asking us then if you don't like the obvious answer?

Does you math include the heat and friction generated when you slam on the brakes?

Just looking for opinions. Comparing to what others have on their trucks.

Braking! If the tread stays on while breaking, that is orders of magnitude more stress than the G forces of high speed driving.
