How freely should the A/C/Heater blower spin?

Perhaps a strange question...I haven't found the answer here.

My A/C fan has been pretty weak on all settings lately. "Lo" works, but you can feel/hear almost nothing coming from the vents. I replaced the cabin filter and pulled the blower fan to clean everything. It was all clean...no leaves, dirt, critters...

While I had the fan out, I noticed that it doesn't spin very freely by hand. I cleaned and lubed it, but it just seems a bit stiff. When you turn the fan manually with your hand, it spins, but stops quickly after you let go.

Is that normal? I would think it should spin really freely.

I had mine out a couple of weeks ago to find a noise in the system. Turns out a leaf found its way in to the fan.

What you are describing as sort of stiff doesn't seem like mine. I mean it doesn't free wheel like a bicycle wheel when you spin it because there is a motor in there, but it shouldn't be stiff. Try opening up the little door on it and blow some compressed air from an air compressor in it. I did and a good bit of black soot came out. I suppose it was the carbon dust from the brushes wearing away.

You could also carefully plug it back in and run it out of the housing. It should spin rather quickly. Do that at your own risk, though.

Purchased my 03 v8 not to long ago. Although the vehicle gets cold on highways and it's not very much a problem, during city driving the fan is super weak! The difference between each setting is minimal. Going to take it apart and clean it up. I did the cabin air filter and no difference.

A possible after market replacement is also a consideration. OEM factory is waaaay expensive.

I pulled it out and cleaned the heck out of it. I was even able to get the motor out of the housing (not recommended) and lube it. It works in all settings, but man, it's barely blowing. I'm thinking I need to buy another fan.

Did you replace it after all? I found the fan for $32 on eBay, so it's not a giant gamble. Just a bummer to find out the original fan works just fine.

Even my wife noticed it and said, "your fan is really wimpy." :frisky:
