How important is the "tune up" on a V8 2005?

I have almost 30K miles on my 2005 V8 and realized that I never had a tune up on it. I am only averaging about 16.7 mpg in mix of city and highway driving. I change my oil on a regular basis and check my tire pressure. Would a tune up produce any high MPG? How necessary is the tune up? What excactly do they do as I believe its around $500 and thats a bit much at this point in time. Is there anything that I should have done to make my Runner last longer? Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Your link wouldn't load though. I will change the air filter as I havn't done it since I owned it which is probably REALLY bad. What is entailed in a tune up? I already get my tires rotated on a regular basis.

dude, honestly for me I get my truck "attended to" every 4000 miles...... and that means whatever it takes to keep her fresh and tight. Some might say that it's overkill, but I really like to take care of my machine as much as i like to give use to it. Give and get.
Id say let a TRUSTED toyota dealership/tech handle your truck and you will not have regrets. take care of the machine

There's really nothing to tune. There's regular maintenance and making sure that wear items are still in good condition. Long gone are the days of replacing distributor caps and rotors, and adjusting the carb. On the V8, plugs are 120K miles. (They're only 30K on the V6, though.)

Follow your maintenance guide (linked above), and you'll be fine.

The only problem with the link above is that its for V6 only as it doesn't give you the option to select V8 anywhere. I am glad you mentioned the plugs in the V8 are good until 120K as the link above says 30K which means that its or the V6. So I guess the only major think is to re-torque the propellar shaft bolt and lube.

Ok, I get it now. You are right, the website doesn't offer a V6/V8 option. It does say, in note 6, that the plug change applies to the 1GR-FE engine which is the V6. The only way you'd know the V8 plugs were good for 120k is to select the 120k service interval on the website.

It is not the best designed website in terms of human interface. :bash:
