$135 is reasonable price. Make sure they use a primer before putting down urethane adhesive. Any nicks or cuts in the paint along the edges must be covered or the paint will start to bubble.

I have free glass on my insurance policy, got a huge rock chip from the highway and got it replaced free. I was quoted around $200 for glass and install if i didn't have the coverage. I also made sure to ask for OEM spec glass because of the stories I've heard of people getting thinner windshields with low quality glass from aftermarket suppliers.

never mind, they don't offer glass coverage in colorado. it is covered under comprehensive w/deductible.

That's not bad. I had it done for $125. Make sure they do NOT re-use the molding or you'll find yourself with a leaky windshield come winter.
That's because Safelite is the most expensive auto glass repair shop you'll find. Try someone else and it's much cheaper.

Here in SoCal, Safelite is the cheap one with the inferior product.
I had them do one in my old '91 truck. Once installed, I noticed a major ripple in the glass directly in the driver's view. I stopped payment, told them it was defective, and had it done someone else correctly, for more money, with OEM-spec glass.

I have "free" glass with mine too. Trust me, they add $2 a month into the coverage.

I went with Safelite on my 1994 extended cab. I would not do it again. The install was questionable. I think they used the old molding, or at the very least, the old chrome trim. In less than a few months, another rock jumped up and cracked across my lower windshield. It was out of my field of vision. Then, a few months later, a rock the size of a friggin fat strawberry goes flying off an elevated fork on I-5 and snaps into my windshield with fury. It scared the shit out of me, but to my credit, I didn't translate my startled reaction to the steering wheel or breaks. It put a huge, yet stable chip right into my line of sight. It's still there, and bugs the hell out of me. If I get it fixed, I will go with someone else besides Safelite. I just don't trust the work or product very much. I can't say that the glass is cheap, because I just don't know, but I am very suspicious.

Oh! they also love my 4runner's rear cargo glass. If your insurance doesn't cover this, (mine did), the OEM glass is hellish expensive, ~$600 after install. Aftermarket glass is less expensive, but most glass techs with experience replacing the 3rd gen cargo glass told me that aftermarket is similar glass, but a not quite there rubber gasket that comes with. This seems to make getting a good seal and clean look problematic.

Guys I am in need of a windshield replacement and I cannot seem to wrap my head around how to go about it... As in I have been looking online and asking around about whether OEM is the way to go. Reading online is very tricky as no one gives you a concrete answer, I suppose the reason for this is that there simply is no concrete answer and it depends on dealer, local shops etc. I have been looking through this OEM vs Aftermarket Windshield - Which One is Better? but I still am not sure on how to go about this. If anyone has some idea or I should just start asking around the shops. Thing is I am not looking for the cheapest option, rather something that will really do the trick because I have already read some bad stories about windshield replacements

OEM isn't necessary. My beige/gold tinted aftermarket glass has held up great over the years. Would do it again. Just pick a place that's courteous and does a good job. Toyota glass just ain't worth it.

I've collected 5 or 6 rock chips in mine and have been expecting one of them to start running. Is there any product you can use to prevent cracks from developing from chips? I'd rather save the OEM windshield if possible...

Yes, Rain X's windshield repair kit works pretty good. Might need two kits but it does work. Follow the directions, except when it says don't do it too tight. It needs to be super tight on the glass if you want it to penetrate all the way into the chips and cracks and you'll have to use a hair dryer or heat gun to get it all the way in. Once the resin cures it works very well.

I've had repairable chips on the glass, but thankfully never any that led to cracks requiring full replacement considering I live in Colorado. I go to Tim over at a Chick and A Windshield A Chick And A Windshield – Your Local Windshield Experts Professional, knowledgable, quick, and kind. Great work. Support a local guy.
