How often do you change your oil/What octane do you run?

5K miles as per the maintenance schedule with full synthetic oil, and 87 octane per the manual.

Anyone putting higher than 87 in a V6 is just wasting their money. Don't take my word for it, there's plenty of corroborating research.

Could be California gas, but 91 pings a LOT less in both my 4runner and my Tacoma 4.0s than 87 does. I've been running 91 in the Tacoma since I bought it brand new (with 87 once or twice to see if there was a difference) in 2006. I tried running 87 in the 4runner when I first got it just to see and eventually switched it to 91 as well.

V6....yes, I would never run anything higher than 87 octane. My dad has an 05 v6 and that’s all he’s ever run.
Owning the V8, I’d prefer to go with 93 since 91 isn’t available around here. Just my own personal preference

I’m also still on conventional oil, but thinking of making the switch.

Firs at 2K, 2nd at 5K, every 5K after that with OEM filters and Mobil 1 0-20 full synthetic engine oil. Also installed a magnetic drain plug just because why not. Serviced my diffs at a little over 11K and glad I did, oil was nasty. I'll serving them every 15K or so just because why not. Oil can never be to fresh or clean and it's cheap peace of mind for me.

Yes, it’s always good to adapt to your specific situation. I was referring to people who use higher octane under the illusion that it makes a difference absent special circumstances.

V8 on normal 87 octane, and oil every 5k miles using regular.

My mechanic who now runs his own shop used to be the head @ a Toyota dealership. Said 4Runners keep oil very clean, hence no need to go to synthetic or change every 3k miles.

Thus far my rig runs like a top, 07 approaching 150k without a single hiccup.

I run whatever grade I can get in ethanol free, usually 90. Otherwise I run the highest octane available.

Depending on how I've been driving: towing, stop and go, highway exclusively, Wheeling for days, Ill change the oil every 3 - 5k miles. I use a Toyota filter and run the recommended weight from Royal purple. Previous owner used Royal purple so I stuck with it. 30cents per gallon across 20 gallons seems worth it to me to use the best gas. I'm shooting for 500k miles so I'd rather not look back in a few years and tell myself I was dollar wise and penny stupid.

Every 5k using Mobil1 0w40. Usually 91, but throw in 89 or 87 every once in a while. The previous oil change, 2017, was 5k at 14 months. Oil was tested and everything was fine.
I've had the truck for 5 years and I'm the second owner. Bought it with 46700 and it now has just over 75k. Amsoil throughout the rest of the drivetrain.

My '03 V8 gets premium so long as my company still foots my expenses. :llama:

Nice!

For mine, I run M1 0-30w with Toyota filter with an approximate 5k change. I figure since I’m running full synthetic if I go over a bit, no biggie, but I’ve had very good luck running full synthetic oils in all my vehicles so decided to convert the 4Runner as well, even though it’s claimed that it “doesn’t need it”. For gas, I have only run just the basic unleaded since it is not labeled “premium only” like some of my vehicles have been. However, after reading this thread I may experiment with a higher octane just to see if it makes a noticeable difference in mileage and performance. In most modern cars, I’ve found it to be throwing money away unless they specifically call out premium because of turbo, supercharge, high compression, etc.

oil every 5k, fuel 87-89

From the manual:
Fuel type:
Unleaded gasoline, Octane Rating 87
(Research Octane Number 91) or higher.
For improved vehicle performance, the
use of premium unleaded gasoline with
an Octane Rating of 91 (Research Oc-
tane Number 96) or higher is recom-
mended.
Fuel tank capacity, L (gal., Imp. gal.):
87 (23.0, 19.1)

I run the M1 full synthetic rated for 15,000 miles to 10,000 miles on their 20,000 mile filter. I'm curious to see what the other member who runs this same combo has to report with his blackstone oil analysis. My 2004 V8 is still running great, despite having a few things needing done engine-wise it's never let me down and even with 245,000 miles on it, I wouldn't hesitate driving it across the country.

04 V6 at 127k miles. I’ve been doing my oil changes at 7k mile intervals. Mobil 1 FS and OEM filters. I live 2 minutes away from my local Toyota dealership so I just go there for my filters. Would like to get an oil analysis done sometime to see the results.

Running 87 octane. I did try 91 earlier this summer and it boosted the mpg a little bit on the longer drives with consistent speed, but nothing exceptional or worth switching over to that octane to basically just pay more money.

Always ran Mobil 1 Synthetic in both my 4th gens, also ran them on 93 octane. Changed the oil every 5-6K miles

Exactly what I do, but 91 octane is about as high as it goes here.

05' V8

I've changed the diff oils pretty regularly, this time I'm doing front/rear/ maybe center diff with 85w-140 Amsoil Severe Gear.

Thats what I am doing now. When I change my oil next I plan on sending a sample to blackstone. My previous samples were good on that combo and they recommend that I should have no issues running it to 10k miles.

Previously ran Mobil 1 synthetic, now doing Quaker State Ultimate Durability with OEM filter every 5,000 miles.

Fuel I run low grade when it's all that's available or when I'm running flat boring highway getting to the good places. Around town, when towing, trail riding, or any hilly areas I like 91+ octane.

2006 V8 w/ roughly 145K-ish on the engine. Mobil 1 5W-30 High Mileage Syn every 8K with Toyota Filter. Run CA 87 and never had any issues. Gas is already too expensive here as it is.

Why so thick?

starting the 1st of this year, my company also started paying for my fuel. so, starting the 1st of the year, I starting running premium in my 06. thus far, I haven't noticed any difference. i'll give it a year, if I still don't see any improvements, im going back to 87.

I change the oil in both of my 4Runners and my Tundra at 5,000 miles, and I only run the cheapest gas available.

I run super in my Turbo TA, it actually makes a difference in that engine, literally a waste of money to run super in a 4runner.
