how to: carry a 4x8 on a roof rack

One of the things I need a couple times a year is to carry 4x8 building material. Usually just a few sheets of whatever.

Now that I have a roof rack, I'm wondering if I could use that to carry it instead of hooking up the trailer or getting a truck.

What is the best way to secure a 4x8 sheet to the roof rack? I have yakima cross bars now, that should help a little (being flat, and 58" wide).

How far is your drive going to be?.... and freeway driving?
The yakima cross bars are great for support but the flexing of the 8 feet long sheets is what I would be concerned with. Can't you lift the back, put the passenger seats down and lay down the sheets in the back? Check the width to see if the 4' sheets ill fit. If so, tie the hatch down and attach a red flag to the end of the sheets. Sorry if this is no help to you.

If you don't want to use the roof.

It will fit in the back and hang out so you can't shut the tail gate.
