How to determine exhaust leak?

What is the best way to determine an exhaust leak? I think I can hear one but not sure. Is it best to take it into a mechanic or a muffler shop? If there is one, it is coming from closer to the engine, not the muffler or exhaust pipe underneath.

Take a look at the exhaust manifolds, or lay under the truck with it running and parked. You will certainly be able to hear it. My parents f150 has had an exhaust manifold leak for years now...it wasn't a big deal for them so they just let it be and dealt with the noise.

Do you think it's around the engine/manifolds, or running down the undercarriage? I've had luck in the past by getting under the truck while it is idling and having a friend press a rag over the end of the exhaust for a minute and using my ears. Good luck with the search!

Oops, just reread that...if it's towards the engine you may still have luck using the rag technique. Those are definitely tougher to trace down.

I have been chasing one down for a few months, actually multiple. I believe there is just one left, but for gods sake I cannot find the thing.

I have thrown in the towel and am going to take it to a shop with a smoke machine for easy detection
