How to Rebuild a Power Steering Pump for $12

This is my first attempt at a tech thread. I just rebuilt my 04 4.0L Power Steering Pump for $15. A far cry from the $100+ aftermarket pumps.

Here is how I did it:

The Skinny:

1) Disconnect reservoir and drain fluid and disconnect supply and return hoses
2) Remove belt
3) Disconnect high-pressure line
4) Remove pump
5) Disassemble pump
6) Spec pump
7) Rebuild pump
8) Reinstall pump
9) Connect high-pressure line with new seal
10) Purge system
11) Fill and Bleed System

Locate Pump and Disconnect

You PSP is located on the passenger side of the engine, just below the AC fill line. Just follow the fill hose from the Reservoir down to the pump.

Disconnect and drain

Disconnect both the lines from the Reservoir. I used a plastic tub to catch the ATF. Have plenty of paper towels handy to catch spillage.

Remove Reservoir

Bend the metal tab on the back of the Reservoir outward and then slide the Reservoir up and out. Leave the larger fill line to the PSP, leave the smaller return line in place.

Lessen the tension on the fan belt and remove it from around the PSP pulley. Do not remove from the rest of the pulleys and idlers. So, its easy to go back in place.

Disconnect the oil pressure switch. Be careful not to damage it. Press the tab from the back side and slide upward, gently.

Disconnect the high-pressure line a the pump. Use an extension and a breaker bar.

Remove the two bolts holding the pump in place. You must go through the pulley. One bolt is at the 1:00 o'clock position, the other is at the 5:00 o'clock position.

Clean PSP

Get some SimpleGreen and wire brush and clean the exterior.

A buddy from the forum pulled his power steering pump and all we weren't afraid to do was the one big gasket and some gunk scraping. It's a v6 so his pulley doesn't come off as easily as my V8. Any advice for getting at that bearing and the other seals?
