How would you go about cleaning this up?

Hello all,

New member here. 2008 Pearl Urban Runner with 88k.

Overall this runner is in good shape. Frame has very little rust.

However, There are small screws and bolts that do have rust on them like this:



There is also rust on my trailer hitch.

How would you go about cleaning this up? As far as those screws go, can I simply take them out and put new ones in?

Are you worried about the rust on the screw, or the contamination around it?

for the contamination around it. use some quality quick detail spray/waterless wash to clean the area.

then use quick detail spray + Clay bar to remove the dots.

use a sealant such as Jetseal (on amazon) to protect the area

I'm more worried about the rust. There are random screws all over the place with a little bit of surface rust and was wondering the best way to take care of it.

Would the easiest thing to do be just to replace the screws? Any idea on a part number/where to find the right screw?

Remove them, sandblast them, or if you do not have a blast cabinet or access to one you can sand/scotchbrite them, prime and paint, then re-install. I usually put a little anti-seize on most screw threads before re-installing. You could spray the heads with a little Boeshield if you are real picky. I think most guys will laugh about that much rust, the ones I have seen from the rust belt areas are real bad.

The screws can be gotten from a dealership. A lot of guys here use Toyota of Dallas or Camelback, good pricing. They have parts break downs with numbers.

If you think that is a problem, you have not seen rust. I wouldn't worry about that. Its not even visible from the outside of the truck when the rear hatch is closed.

You'd probably go into shock if you saw the rust on mine...

You can get replacements from the dealer but be prepared to pay more than you ever thought screws could be worth. I would take the old ones out and use a cleaner wax to clean up around the area before you install new ones.

a good way to get the road grime off your rear bumper and hatch is to use a clay bar w soapy water it will remove the grime and make the paint smooth again.

Ive used one to remove tiny rust spotting to white cars quite a few times and they work awesome.

On a darker colored vehicle you may need to buff the area you use it on after, because sometimes the debris you are removing will scratch the clearcoat.

You could take the screws out and drop them in a mixture of CLR and water, go over with a toothbrush, dry, and paint.
