Humming Noise from Front End

Hello All:

I have 2010 Trail edition with KDSS and 11,000klm millage. There is no modification on the truck, However, the tires were replace with Michelen MS2 since 1 day of purchase (same size).

The grease in hubs hardens and makes rubbing nose at subzero temperatures similar to my older version of this truck (disappointing). This noise goes away after driving for several kilometers, after the grease heats up.

However in addition to this noise, I have humming noise from the front and I assume it is coming from hubs. The noise continues to be there even if when the transmission is shifted into N while driving. This humming nosing is noticeable at 60 klm where road noise is low. It is also there in higher speed for those whom can take a note.

I have an appointment at the dealer later this week and I was hoping to get some feedback on this before then.

That's a fairly aggressive tread pattern ... you sure it's not the tires?

Are you in 4WD or 2WD when it hums?

Have them check it for Technical Service Bulletin T-SB-0175-10
4 or 5 people on here have had this problem with the part time systems and had them replaced.

Front Differential Growl/Rumble Noise (T-SB-0175-10)

Some 2010 model year part-time 4WD 4Runner vehicles may exhibit a growl or rumble noise from the front differential assembly when the vehicle is in motion in 2WD.

Noise in 2WD

The truck makes the noise in 2WD.

The tires have been on for 9 months, but the noise started a month ago.

Humming/Growl/Rumle noise

Hello All:

The dealer has confirmed that the noise is indeed comes from the front deferential.

Thanks to Gary, US TSB number enabled the dealer to quickly identify the corrective action.

For Canadians, like me, please note that the US TSB information is not readily available to dealer in Canada. There is a Canadian TSB number for the same problem. I will post upon my visit to dealer.

Btw, the parts are not available Canada and are now on order. There is no ETA for parts arrival either.

According to dealer, this problem does not pose any safety issue, but I do wonder if it damages other parts till the repair is done.
 
Did they tell you what part is bad and needs replacing ? or is the front differential shot ?

Hi:

My truck is return and so far there are no humming or growling noise. The replaced part were identical to US TSB as follow.

The noise I was experiencing was in 2WD did stop and returned at some point. The important thing to note was that I could feel the vibration under my foot while driving.

Hello All,

Second repair in less than 2.5 years with 50,000 klm milage. Over a year after and the problem was back. This time the problem was much clearer than before.

The problem: Vibration noise from engine housing when driving in 2wd. The vibration is at its worst in speed of 60 klm to 70 klm. No vibration in 4Wd.
Diagnoses by Dealer: problem traced to front differential assembly
Correction as per dealer's discription: replace the front differential assembly and front right shaft assembly.
Replacement Parts number (Canadian):
41110- 35A90 Carrier Differential
43430-60090 Shaft Assembly Drive

its called an engine , its located in the front end of the vehicle
 
Glad you got it situated. They changed out my transfer case before they got their head out of their a$$ and replaced the front diff like the TSB instructed.

ETA: I just saw this is an on-going deal. I think (someone correct me??) that they changed the PN of the front diff somewhere along the line. My noise hasn't come back yet. But, you have more mileage than I do.
 
I am new here just read through. I have a 2011 4runner 20k miles. I do/have not use/d the 4wd. I've never towed anything.
I do not drive far distances and do not abuse my truck. I've only taken the truck to the dealership for its regular maintenance....
BOTH front and read differential replacement. Rear first, a couple weeks ago...noise returned, took it back to dealer again and they said front diff and axle replacement. So both differentials within 1 month. And all in a practically new car. Any ideas here? Any advice? I don't need an ongoing problem for the next 5 years. Thanks

It's a known issue. The front diff was probably the issue all along. You would be surprised how many dealers don't look into TSB's when a vehicle comes to them with an issue. I believe there's a new PN for the diff called out within the TSB. I wouldn't worry about having an on-going issue; I don't. :)

I take it you're saying that they replaced the rear in error? That there was nothing wrong with the rear diff at all? I guess there's no way of ever knowing at this point.
Do you have any idea why it takes so long to get the parts in, almost 3.5 weeks.

Yes, I think they replaced the rear diff in error. I haven't heard of any issues with the rear diff on these vehicles. Only the front.

I also have this problem and closely followed this thread. Thanks to rsarrami (OP) for initially starting this thread and Harper7 for referencing the TSB. 5K miles ago, I took it to a dealer close to my house who claimed they "could not look up TSB's". Thought WTF, and decided to try another dealer. I just had it in for the 20K service at Metro Toyota in Cleveland and showed them the documentation. Rsarrami was good enough to scan and send me his documents from his service trip and it was very helpful. Metro immediately recognized the issue and has set me up for later this week to repair/replace front differential assembly. They are also also going to address the rear propeller drive shaft that has been discussed here on this site (TSB-0040-12). I also mentioned the lumbar "creeking/popping" (TSB-0051-12), which they recognize, but claim not to have an adequate fix at the time for it. I have had some bad experiences at dealers with them being unable to, or refusing to recognize certain problems, but so far, I am very happy with Metro, which is where I originally bought the truck. Hopefully, these problems are taken care of. Thanks again to the above individuals who shed some light on this for me. This really is a great forum with knowledgeable/helpful members. Will post an update when repairs are made.
 
So finally got the call that my truck is ready from the front diff/axle fix. Also added that while driving it today they heard another noise and went ahead and replaced a REAR bearing. I mean how many times are they going to replace things. WTF was wrong in the first place. Clearly the rear end issue was not a mistake as they not only replaced the rear diff but now a bearing?! Like I said, I know nothing about cars and trucks etc so maybe this is normal, maybe they're incompetent. Any advice would be fantastic. Thanks guys!
