Let's say a move to California was in the works.... and we wanted to take our 4Runners (2005 and 2007 v6's) with us from PA (originally sold here as well).

What's the likelihood they'll pass the California Smog test so we can register them in Cali?

my real question is when did the 4Runner become 50 state emmision/ smog legal?

thanks for any input or sharing any personal experiences in this regard.

If you don't have any check-engine lights or anything then the chances should be about 100%. All cars sold in the US are 50-state compliant, including California emissions.
 
I think there are safer states to move to versus the Republik of Kalifornia! The taxes, cost and rules/restrictions would just kill me.
 
Well I'd agree with you but if my wife gets this job then I'll be retiring next year (20-25 years early)... So I will gladly deal with the Cali drawbacks if it happens.
 
Eh... I thought so to, but the state is getting progressively worse in many respects and more and more asinine. A lot of smart people and corporations are bailing out of California for a reason.

I would not claim to be "smart" but I was born in SoCal, lived there for 58 years before bailing out. The laws just kept getting more insane, and since I left nine years ago, have spiraled even more restrictive.

I loved tinkering with a fast Mustang, but the dreaded CARB smog check every year and having to put stuff back on for the test just drove me crazy. Lucky to have a buddy out of state I sold it to.

Now with the firearms laws there, 10% sales tax, etc, it is difficult to understand why anyone would move there. The Prop 13 tax situation is enough of a killer that few can afford to buy a house there now.

There are many more, just off the top of my head after nine years of relief of being out of there. The state is beyond coming back from being bankrupt, only more taxation and restrictions are in the future there.
 
So what your saying is if I don't work (retired), don't have a classic muscle car, have a stockpile of guns (and ammo) I'll be bringing with me ,have zero plans to buy a house and plan to ignore the laws and liberals by fishing all day I should be good? Lol... Sounds like a 70 and sunny dream to me.

Actually I'm thinking more Bend, Oregon... I just feel more at home in that place than I do in California...

You are probably going to want to check out the CA state laws regarding firearms BEFORE bringing in your "stockpile of guns (and ammo)" as you will more than likely end up breaking one of their RIDICULOUS laws (at which time you will be forfeiting them). Oh, and I would love to thank all of the California liberals for driving a portion of your firearms industry to Texas. No really, THANK YOU! Thank God I live in Texas!
 
ok ok... wasn't meaning for this thread to turn into a California hate thread... I was simply asking if our 4th gen 4runners sold in PA would pass the present day smog test without any retrofit of CA specific emission equipment.

I've been to Bend, Oregon. Buddy has a cabin on a langdon lake there outside the town. gorgeous country for sure!
 
After spending 30 years in Cali, hope you're bilingual and get used to seeing more people than you could ever have imagined sucking the life out of every welfare/social service program in existence.

To answer your question, you should not have any issues getting your vehicle to pass a smog check.
