I am considering extending oil changes, maybe?

For years, I have posted that changing oil on a regualr basis is the way to go. I currently change oil every 3,000 miles with Castrol GTX or every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1 synthetic oil.

I use Mobil 1 on both of my 4Runners. I am now wondering if I should change my ways a bit. On my 2004, I bought it used and I started to change oil more often and I did see a difference, in the way the oil looked and the gas mileage, but now that it looks decent, maybe I should go the way manufacters are going, or at least be a little less conservative.

I am considering going 4,000 miles in the car that uses Castrol GTX and maybe go 7,000 miles on the 4Runners that use Mobil 1.

I have had good luck with my engines, I never had sludge or other oil related problems and the engines look great over time, hopefully extending it a bit, they still look great, but I am not sure. What are your feelings, change with the times, or don't listen to what others are saying?

Even 8K is fine with M1, but only if you use an M1 or similar quality extended performance filter. The filter is more important IMO. Most normal filters like Wix and Frams aren't intended to last past 5K. AFAIK, the Castrol GTX is just as good as M1 so I would think 8K is safe for that too, but I've never used it myself (it's full synth right?).

Castrol GTX is their reg. dino oil, I still use it in my 19 year old car. I have used this stuff for years.


What do you think of Purulator Pure 1 filters?
 
I've never used Purolator filters, but I've read they are one of the best quality available. The ext. perf. Amsoil filters (EA057) have ruined a few engines of members on here so I would stay away from them (althoug Amsoil did pay for the new engines so I think the company is still ok in my book).

The PureOne, premium Purolator is a great filter... The regular ones that begin with an 'L' rather than a 'PL' are just ok. Another great filter at our Wally World is the FL400S Motorcraft. It fits and is an extremely good filter for the money.

Get your money's worth if you're planning on using a full synthetic.

I would suggest 7,500-10,000 miles or 1year whichever comes first with Mobil 1 Extended Protection 5w-30, Castrol Edge 5w-30, Pennzoil Ultra 5w-30, or Amsoil SSO. All are stout oils which could easily handle once a year oil changes.

Purolator PureOne are excellent filters, but I would suggest a filter spec'ed for extended oil change intervals such as a Mobil 1 (or K&N), Fram EXTENDED Guard, or bosch distance plus.
 
1 year is pretty brave for my taste. 6 months is when I change my Mobil1 and stock filter.
 
$4.00 for the larger Toyota Filter (for the V8 and not the V6), and $24.50 for 0W-30 Mobil 1 every 5000 miles.

From what I gather, the air filter > oil filter > oil. So if I was going to go for an extended duration oil change, I'd make sure I changed my air filter a bit more frequently and use the best I could get (couldn't find a Purolator Pure One for my car, so I change it every 12,000 miles)
 
I have been going 1 year or 25,000 with the Trooper I had and with the wife's 06 Sienna. No problems. I will ask if anyone has tried to find an Amsoil oil filter on their site lately? Last I heard, They pulled the filters for the Sienna because they would fill up with contaminants too quickly sending them into bypass mode which would trigger a warning light. I recently looked up the application guide and it does not list an Amsoil filter for either my 4R or the Sienna. I personally let my Preferred Customer status lapse because, for one my Trooper at the time was drinking the stuff and two, it was getting too costly with shipping and tax.

I used Mobil 1 for years, before the whole ext. drain thing. I know that oil has come further since. I myself am a truck driver and know the punishment diesel oils can take. I am going to try the Rotella 5w40 in my 4R with an extended life filter. Another brand of filter to look at, is Mann. They make a 7500 mile filter, which, by the way is on my wife's van. I know NAPA sells them.

The Pure One filter from Purolator are great filters, didn't see one for the air/oil. I believe this one is even sold at my local Wal-Mart.
 
I do 5000 miles oil change interval for all my Toyota. For Honda, I follow the factory service interval of 10,000 miles. So far so good.

I use only Mobil 1 Synth, and stock Toyota or Honda filter.

People can say to go X amount of miles, but without a used oil analysis no one will know for sure.

Its $25 and you will know the exact state of your oil and if you can prolong oil changes.

I am a life long amsoil customer. Standard protocol

Change oil filter every 10K miles
Change air filter every 10K miles
Change oil every 30K miles (irrespective of time)
Change auto transmission fluid every 60K

Worked on 1984 Accord (305K miles)
Worked on 2000 4Runner (247K miles)

Got rid of both due to non engine related issues.
 
Switched to Mobil 1 5W30 early on at 24K Km (15K miles.) Stuck to OEM 8K Km interval for most of the rest of the warranty period. Switched to 16K Km (10K mi) interval at 64K Km with an OEM D3 filter change every 8K Km (plus ~1/2 litre top up.) Coming up on 196K Km. Works for me. Mobil 1 EP is expensive up here so I don't see the value of it.
 
I have a 1998 4Runner with 250000 miles on the 3.4 engine, and a 2004 with 100000 miles on the V8.

I recommend doing what toyota recommends. I do not follow my own advice. On the 2004, I change oil every 10,000 miles with Mobil1 oil and filter.

On the 1998, I used the oil type of oil and tried to change the oil every 7500 miles but went to 10000 often. At around 150000 i switched to mobil 1 with mobil 1 filter and changed every 10,000 miles.

No one should or would tell you not to follow the manual. My information is just a data point. Once again, I recommend changing it per the manual.
