After about a good 6 months of searching for a 4th gen 4runner that didn't have a rust issue, I gave up an brought a Subaru. Well the other day I just inherited a 2002 4Runner, and now I am trying to figure out which one to keep. The subie has about 66k miles, auto, clean and would definitely last another 10 years, but i am not crazy about it. The 4Runner has 120K and just a little rust, and would need some cleaning up, but no major problems, I could see another 5 years. What do you think?

IMO you should Sell the subie! It is less reliable, more expensive to repair, and not as fun off-roading. 120k miles on a 4Runner, it's just getting broken in. The 4Runner also holds its value really well.

It's an xs subaru, and already on Craigslist. I think I have been in love with 4runners for a while. The I am not sure what kind of 4runner, automatic, Sunroof, CD, and wheels. Don't think it's worth more than 4k. I am a little concerned about rust on the 4th gen as I was unable to locate a rust free one. I don't go off-roading, but there is always the chance. Thinking of cleaning her up and just keeping it.

I vote to sell the subi, clean up the t4r and keep it for little while to get a feel for it. If you dont offroad or camp much, the runner is the perfect reason to connect with some people and start enjoying the great outdoors. You will be amazed how much these trucks can handle and even more amazed by the places it will take you( and home in one piece). There is a reason a lot of people are obsessed and passionate about these trucks, take it offroad and youll see why

I looked at a couple Subie Outbacks before finding my T4R. The newer ones (4th gen I think) have a lot more ground clearance and the engine is pretty bulletproof, and even the 6 cylinder is known to get mileage in the 30's but yeah the full time AWD will mean more expensive maintenance and ultimately it gave up too much in terms of towing and off-road capability to the Toyota. Glad I went with the Toyo.

Definately gonna sell the subie, however I am not sure if I should go with the 3gen or 4th gen 4runner. I am worried about the rust on the 4th gen. I will be taking the 3gen 4runner to the shop tomorrow so I can have a good look under neath and also see what kind of work it will need. Wish me luck.

So it looks like I got some info wrong, it's a 2000 SR5, not a 2002. Other than that here are some pictures.... I am hoping it will clean up well and provide years of service..

You are making the correct choice. That is a nice looking runner. It looks a lot like the wifes 3rd gen that she totalled last year......man I miss it.
