I just joined a Corolla forum to get some ideas on what to do with the woman's 14 Corolla. She wants her headlights blacked out but is nervous about me ripping apart her new LED headlight assemblies because they're not cheap to replace if I screw something up.

These guys..... are into putting VVT-i stickers on their trunks and adding door lock striker plate covers to "dress up" their door jambs. They think dealer added tint is covered by their factory Toyota warranty. Most have no idea about offset for rims and don't seem to know how to change their own oil. The difference between the technical discussions here with a bunch of guys that know how to DIY and really know a lot about our trucks and the guys there that have issues with unlocking their doors is crazy.

I had to vent.

That is funny. It's a different caliber of enthusiasts on here for sure. Extremely knowledgeable members on here who are always willing to help. Also, I run our accessories department at my family's Toyota dealership and I actually warranty all work that we do to any car within the first 3 year/36K mile warranty. I even let the customer know if they still come across any issues with any of the accessories that we have installed to bring it in and I will help resolve the issue. So as far as the tint goes for, with me anyway, I will warranty our work.

Just makes me laugh at the difference between the groups. I can say this about them though, they spell bumBer correctly.

If you think your Corolla forum is bad, you should see the F150 forum I lurk. There's some guys there that know their shit, but the signal to noise is SO much lower than here.

My first non-car forum was tacomaworld (prior to that - legacygt.com) and I was amazed at the posts I read there. the LGT forums were filled with well formed posts of people who had the $ for a turbo car, but still cared enough about the hands-on and understanding to join in the first place, thus there was little rice, few typos/ridiculousness. TW was a mixed bag, just throw out the fact that something OTHER than Toyota could be semi-reliable and the asstards came out of the wood work.

Now, being on some Ram forums, it's absurd. Male monkey dominance every other post for most of the boards. In everyone's defense, at least these people cared enough to join a message board. You may like striker plates and silly garnish for a while - after you find yourself in a couple dozen people's forum signatures saying something ridiculous you'll get broken in. Gotta say though, the T4R and Landcruiser boards are home to the most knowledgeable and hands-on folks I've run across in the automotive world.

Yeah, non-4runner people that I tell about this forum and what goes on here are usually pretty amazed at the level of expertise, willingness to help, and the overall real DIY attitudes here. I have to say, I really wouldn't have learned half as much as I have about my 4runner without this forum. Hell, this forum was one the biggest sources of knowledge when I was in the market to buy my 4runner in the first place!

Maybe we should get 5VZ stickers? =p

Kinda surprised about the Corolla forum... although I guess the corolla crowd isn't quite as into their cars as the Honda Civic crowd? I had one of those for a while (as an adult, for the mpg's on my commute), and joined a civic board. I was fairly impressed with it - most (not all) were pretty good with the tech/mechanical side. I learned a few things from there, but the car itself was boring. When I got rid of it I vowed that I'd just walk or get a horse if I couldn't afford gas for my trucks.

Anyway, the Jeep forums are hit and miss. A couple are pretty good, with some very knowledgeable people that saved me time and money on some things. The RAM forum I'm on is pretty good. Seems to have a handful of guys that know their stuff, and not much drama. The g37 forum is ok. People are friendly enough, but not many seem to do much modifying there. If someone asks about a serious performance upgrade, they are usually directed to the Z forums (which I've not visited).

And then there's T4R... I really like this forum, it's one of the good ones! :thumb:

This forum is nice, especially to new guys. There are some knowledgeable people here and some who think they know lol. Now, if you want a forum where just about everyone is good then click here: https://www.physicsforums.com/forums/mechanical-engineering.101/ I warn you though it can be brutal, but for different reasons than a Dodge Ram forum.
