I need fender flare paint recommendations

I used Rustoleum Hammered Black on mine over a year ago, and they are still holding up well. It finished off looking dark gray, which is what I was after, but mine has the wider Limited flares on it. Painted the trim the same color, came out great.

Could you PM me pictures (or post pictures of this if the OP does not mind a slight derailment?) I have a Black Limited with the Topaz Metallic flares and cladding and they're all dinged up. Been thinking about Rustoleum Hammered black for a solid glossy black look that will also 'naturally' hide the dings in the flares. Did you use the spray can or paintbrush?

Tyler's 4runner which you show as an example has Limited flares which are smooth plastic.. yours look to be SR5 with more texture.. keep that in mind when choosing paint.

I think the SR5 do have texture; to my knowledge, though, a lot of that can be smoothed out with a heat gun, though, right? Essentially melted the texture so it's smoother overall, then paint? I know that kinda happened for my rear bumper plastic cover. I tried the heat gun method to darken the faded plastic and noticed that it actually got a bit smoother too.

That must be why it looks so good. I don't think putting something glossy on the textured plastic will look very good. I may stick to a basic black then.

on the 3rd gen The fender flares just bolt into the wheel wells. Get a socket wrench, and I think it was a 10mm socket, and just unscrew them all. The flare pieces will come right off. Other years may be different.

I want to paint the gross faded stock fender flares on my truck, and I want it to look as nice as possible, but I haven't painted anything like this before and I'm not sure what paints or primers I need to be looking at.



I know a large part of the quality is how well the job is done, and that will depend on me, but I'm wondering if anyone can suggest the best paint to use for this. Originally I was thinking I would paint them a matte black with bedliner or something, but I found this image of another truck and I really like the gloss paint color on their truck.

Just my opinion: I don't have that style fender but if I did I would go with black bed liner.

Since its plastic make sure you use a adhesion promoter prior to paint. Most over the counter paint will work well, it is all in the prep in the end. I've had good success with duplicolor. Use a nice auto grade clear coat to help protect it.

If you take your flares off, would you be able to make a video on how you did it? Please?? I'm wanting to take mine off and do the same with Monstaliner. I'd like to do both the front and rear bumpers.

Defiantly. I'd like to take my flairs off my limited and go with a more charcoal grey cooler since my flairs clear coat is peeling horribly

I ended up using spray on rustoleum bed liner. Decided against gloss paint because I don't have the smooth flares found on the example truck I posted.

I want to paint mine also..probably black. Question - to take them off you undo the bolts. What about that little piece that looks like rubber between the flare and the body - does that come off too?

Just undo all the bolts and the flares come right off. The rubber spacers may stick to the wheel wells or the flares. Make note of how many and where the were so you can reuse them, they were used like shims to align the flares in install.

To prep the flares I used dish soap and water, then degreaser, then rinse like heck and let dry; then a wipe down with 91% iso alcohol before I pained them. I laid on a few coats of "house brand" black primer from OSH and they came out looking great. I might go back and hit them with bedliner one day too but for now I'm happy.

Are those rubber sealers around the flares, do they go in a channel type thing - such as under the edge of the flare and then once it is tightened, seal up against the body?

BTW - I am learning so much from you all and this forum on how to fix stuff myself. Makes a big difference to me.

i haven't tried this yet, but I've seen a few videos on youtube of using a heat gun to heat the plastic and bring out lower molecules that bring the faded black back to newer looking.

Painting the 'skinny' flares

has anybody painted their SR5 'skinny' flares a color other than black? been searching far and wide but no luck finding pics.

My runners black with some heavily faded flares and I'm considering a metallic dark grey / gunmetal type color on them. Something closer to what you'd see on the limited or newer sport flares.

Not sure if it's been done and i'm skeptical of how it'd come out. I guess worst case they come out ugly and get some cheap black paint over top. :shrug:
