I need help at least with knowledge!

Today is a sad day..

I believe that my alternator died...I thought it was my battery...so I checked the power and water level..the water level was low so I added water that helped the battery so it could charge but I believe my alternator is stealing all the power from the battery...I cant even drive my car around the block before it would lose all power...

I have a car savvy friend who was near me at the time and he came to look at it and checked out the alternator and it wasnt dirty from previous day off road trip to Yankee Hill and Kingston Peak including a few mud puddles along the way...since I thought it was my cause and fault I was so torn...but when he said that it wasnt i felt better but still pretty crappy...

I live about 30-45mins away from where it died...and my friend brought me home...thankfully I was looking at having a HORRIBLE DAY!!!

So i dunno what parts I need if anyone can help its a 2000 4Runner 3.4 5spd. SR5...

Any info would be great!!!

I had the same problem with my 91 I used to have. Replaced the alternator and it was good as new.

On Partznet (a previous or existing sponsor, not sure), a new alternator runs about $250. here's the link...

I'm sure you could find a cheaper one at your local auto parts store, but this is a Toyota product. Sorry I couldn't help with the part number.

lol no worries that will help me greatly...your so far out of 2 forums the only one who has been helpful...and I thank you...the other forum simply was not much help..i more or less felt like and idiot asking them for help from a few people who responded which sadly i know...and they know i am a novice working on cars...your site will lead me in the right direction...

It sounds like the alternator. If you have a Kragen, Pepboys, Autozone type store near you, they can run a battery load test and a test on the alternator to determine which one that's bad.
 
Get a portable Voltmeter, and see if it's charging at all.

With the positive (red) meter lead to the + terminal, and the negative lead to the - terminal, Engine off, battery voltage should be around 12 V.

With the engine running, it should jump to roughly 13.8 V.

If it doesn't increase when engine starts, it's probably the alt.
 
Before you replace your alternator, check your battery posts of they are clean and tight since you just had two road trips.
 
Sam,
if possible, get the Alt. out, and have someone run ya an autozone, checkers etc, BUT call first to get the prices, go to the cheapest one, taking the old Alt. with you, they will test it for free, most if not all places like that will test them free. If you need a new one, then your already at the cheapest place.
Thats what Id do,
wish I could be more help, oh, and toyota Alternators do NOT like mud..
 
She hasn't posted yet. So if you see a lady walking on I-25, I-70, or I-225with an alternator and battery, please pick her up and drop her off at AutoZone. :)

lol thanks guys but I got it taken care of...lol they said it wasnt dirt and mud you guys all helped alot...lol...it was just old and its time...

I hear ya, on joining the darkside, lol people are pretty damn good here... BTW can ya join us on sat ?

lol havent decided...i believe my car is a girl lol i refer to it as a girl lol...

I would absolutely love to join you guys but i have homework and midterm paper that i need to finish and email by Sunday night...but i will hit more runs with you guys after the homework...DAMN I WISH I COULD I NEED ANOTHER TRIP!! but i plan on hitting them more and more since i might be converting lol...
