I see mostly Jeeps on the beach in Delaware.

I recently moved to Delaware and I have noticed it is mostly Jeeps that are out on the beach. When I was out in Utah I saw 4Runners everywhere. Jeeps have the nice feature of being able to remove the top and take the doors off and I imagine the handle riding on the beach fairly well. I've always liked 4Runners and don't think Jeeps are as capable and last as long as the Toyotas. Who has experience with both, and what are your thoughts?

I had 2 JK Rubicon 2Dr manuals. Both hard tops. A 2011 (3.8L) and a 2012 (3.6L). Both were purchased used. 2011 was bone stock, 2012 ended up with 4.88s, 35s, small suspension lift, AEV front bumper with winch, yadayadayada.

I had no real issues with either. The 2012 did end up with a leaking slave cylinder for the clutch, which i fixed. Cheap part and was quick to repair. I'd have no issue owning another from a reliability standpoint.

I switched to the 4R mainly for drivability (much more comfortable. Wheeled the 2012 all over colorado and just kept seeing 4runners on the trails. Found out there was no need to beat myself crazy when a 4R gets along just fine), fuel mileage (LOL, it's bad when the 4R is considered economical), value and room (coulda gone to a 4dr JK, but no thanks).

Every vehicle has its weaknesses and the 4R is no different. I wish it was smaller outside, had less techy gizmos, came with better final drive ratios (4.1 or 4.33) and most of all...came in a manual transmission. But i've gotten by, i really enjoy it. But i also really liked my Jeeps too.

I am lucky enough to have a newer 4Runner and a four door JK. The 4 Runner rides better, has more power, and is simply more comfortable. But I love my JK. If I had to get rid of one the 4 Runner would be gone.

I can see this thread getting out of hand with jokes and memes but for what it's worth I enjoyed my 2010 Wrangler Rubicon while I had it. It was amazing off-road...

...but then the engine threw a rod at 51,000 miles and that was the end of the Jeep.

I had a 79 CJ5 and an 88 XJ, both relatively trouble free.
Both the CJ and my 83 Toyota spent a lot of time on Assateague Island beach.
No problem for the Jeep, and it just accelerated the factory rust package on the Toyota.
The sand and the salt are extremely bad for any vehicle.

I've been a Jeep owner for ~25 years and there's nothing like riding in a Jeep.

I've never ridden in a Toyota of the same vintage but I would imagine they are roughly the same.

I love mine - not the best drivetrain for the time for sure but endless upgradable, very tough and nearly unstoppable off road.

There's a reason they call them 'Jeep Trails'

if you go out on the beach at cape henlopen you'll see me. all you see are stupid jeeps i hate them, you can't drive 1 mile in the summer down there without seeing 5 jeeps. The main reason i love my runner is because its so different then your typical jeep with oversized tires
