I was tired of all the "crap" RTT's, so I made my own. - TERRAPOD!

Those will come later. Right now - it makes more sense two tie them to existing off-the-shelf mounts.

At the moment, I am finishing up the first 3. Mine (001)...and two others for friends' FZJ80's. That is my first to-do. After that - get them out in the field to beat the crap out of them.

Direct mount isn't all that terrible. It's just not on my radar for a "do it now" item. I will once I get the tents finalized.

Well...I'm 6'6" and my wife is 6'1". Not many RTT's fit me well. Two of me can fit in this one perfectly.

(Insert reason #217 why I did this. :biggrin1: )

Awesome. It's hard to get a sense of scale from the pictures. I keep trying to get my wife to go camping more often but her idea is a travel trailer or cabin with a/c.

The first test is highway speeds. If it blows off the top of the 4Runner into a million little pieces, then we know. :thumb:

While in the middle of finishing up 002, I adapted some solar onto the top of the proto (001).
Side note - I'll grab a photo of a person in the tent as soon as I get 002 done and 001 mounted on the 4Runner. (Have a deadline to meet.)

Howdy folks. A quick update:

Finally found a seamstress with canvas experience. She is presently working on 002's fabric portion. Anxious to see how different it will be to my feeble attempt. Once I receive the fabric back from her, final assembly begins. All parts are in place and awaiting installation.

001 Mounting update: awaiting some parts to arrive. Should have the tent mounted up on the 4Runner very soon.

Stay tuned. More exciting stuff to come...

Another little tid bit... The main tent fabric I chose is unbelievable. It is Polyester marine canvas, very similar to Sunbrella. It is waterproof, breathable, abrasion resistant and did I mention... ridiculously durable.

Came here expecting to see build pictures! Little bummed that they are only on FB, don't have an account... The few pictures I see are awesome though! From an engineering perspective, the design is a lot more streamlined, even compared to some industry leading RTT's I've seen.

Howdy folks - much work has been completed. Finally got the prototype (001) up on the 4Runner. Very, very satisfied with the results.
Side note - 002 is underway and is looking fantastic. 002 is due to be mounted on an FZJ-80 in about a week or less. Stay tuned.

Open it looks like the air dam on a big rig LOL drive with it open and see if your MPG increases lol Kidding of course

As an industrial designer, there are times when the smallest details come out looking so ridiculously amazing. This be one of those moments. For some reason, this just looks really cool to me.

Funny thing is - the last time I did that, somebody took the idea, made their own and now sell them. No bueno. :wtf:

Can't feed my family that doing things that way. Lesson learned. :twitch:
