Icon 2.5" C.O. Review

After 1.25 months of waiting, my Icon's finally arrived yesterday. The girlfriend was out to dinner so I had some time last night to unbox them and get them in. All and all the install was cake and I'm hoping based on what I've read that the ride is even better.

But first let me back up. The install isn't quite finished yet. Anyone who has done the Icons knows that each C/O takes 3 3/8"-16 1" bolts and lock washers. Right? Ok, simple enough. The instructions spell that out. Problem is that Icon only sent me 5 3/8" bolts. They sent 6 total bolts, but the sixth one is what looks to be a 5/16" or 1/4".

Easy enough fix. I run to Lowe's and pick up my Grade 8 bolt. Problem solved. But it's still a troubling problem for me. The saying goes, "you get what you pay for". I 100% agree. That's why I expect to get all 6 of my dang bolts in the right size!

This was just fuel to my fire after it took Icon over a month to get me the shocks. Anyway, all and all, I'm sure they'll be great. I just wish these little mishaps didn't have to happen. :violin:

Do you feel that they were worth the price difference between the cheaper options such as the ToyTec?

He has had them on less than a day. This isnt a review quite yet, it takes really pushing your truck to see the value in a good set of coilovers like Icons, Camburgs. Kings, or Foxs. But they without a doubt will out perform any smaller bodied coilover in the fast and rough stuff.

Yes, way too early to tell. Comparing them to my 15 yr old stock 99's w/ 100k miles wouldn't be fair. Sure, my nose doesn't dive a foot with hard braking now, but I'm pretty confident any new setup would have fixed that.

I will be adding commentary as I break them in. Initial impressions with Icon other than the fact that they took too long and sent me the wrong mix of hardware:

Craftsmanship and build quality? Pretty darn good. Tough to beat.
Performance and longevity? Fingers crossed they're as good as what I've read, but part of what sold me was the warranty. I like companies that stand behind their products.

Plus they include a cool sticker :reddance:

Shot of the rear and another angle of front. It's on a slope though in these pics though.

Eff...I know. I keep telling myself I'm done. And yet every week new parts keep showing up  It's a terrible disease.

LOL, you'll never be done!!! The Icon UCAs are nice. I run mine with the optional uniball covers for now, not sure i would really recommend them though.

Why's that? The uniballs giving you problems?

no, no, no, the uniballs are tight and shiny as the day i got them. I originally got the uniball caps to try and keep moisture, sand, dirt, etc from collecting in the upper mount and wearing out the uniball. Ive noticed though that although it certainly keeps all of that stuff from entering the uniball race from the top, all of the same contaminants are able to enter and work their way around the race from the bottom. The problem i see with it then is "out of sight, out of mind" meaning when i hose/wash my truck after a day or weekend of wheeling that unless i pop that upper cap off and clean inside of the cap, that dirt and moisture is going to remain in there indefinitely. Especially to someone that is unaware of dirt building up under the cap.

Clear as mud right? lol I think they are a great idea and realistically a two steps forward, one step back type of product. I think it would just be easier to keep my balls clean and lube them up regularly. :amen:

I've got the same coilovers on a 4th gen and I have to say they are awesome. You will love them. Keep in mind, I'm not a "Wheeler" per se, but a climber who uses his 4-wheel drive rig to get to some very remote places where the term "road" is used very loosely. I just spent a week in SE Utah pushing them and my observations are thus:

Crawling around the flex is incredible. Granted I have TC UCA's which probably help, but I was constantly amazed at just how much down travel my front wheels have. Seemed no matter how gnarly the road got, I always had 4 wheels on the ground.

In my opinion where they really shined was on rough dirt/gravel roads and beat up washboard roads. You can fly down those types of roads and the suspension just eats up the bumps. I was going nearly twice as fast down some of the roads I went down last time I was in the area (with stock suspension). Not only are the smoother, but I felt much more in control. Less drift, bounce, and dive.

I'm not a fan of super lush glowing reviews like this, because generally people like to talk up what they have to justify all the $$$$ they spent on it. However, I just couldn't resist chiming in because I really was that impressed. I've had the Icon setup for about 6 months and have loved the on road performance. This past week was the first time I've really pushed them, not including short off-road excursions, and all I can say is, "Wow!". You will be very happy with your purchase.

Got it, got it. So you DO recommend the UCA's, just not the uniball covers? Makes sense. Whelp, first things first...new wheels. Then perhaps tires. Not sure where money should go next. Maybe my bank account for a bit? :decision:

Now we are on the same page. Happy Modding!

Took the girl to Healdsburg today and got a good 200 miles on the Icons. All freeway driving, but my gosh, what a difference. It's like you hit a bump once. Soaks them up like crazy. I'll get her off the highway next weekend (the 4runner) at a friend's ranch, but so far I'm very satisfied.

Well, about 7 months on the truck, and driver side is completely blown and feels like Jello and passenger side is leaking oil. I've had it up in Tahoe about 10 times and offroad maybe another 3 or 4 times. So fairly light offroad use with most of the miles on road. I'd estimate about 12-15k miles.

That's pretty terrible if you ask me...does anyone want to trade me front struts? I'm also looking for a set of loaners while I send these in for rebuild. Let me know if you have anything.

Jesus, that's terrible. I'd ask for a refund if I were you. What garbage. I got a set of TRD Tundra Billies that I'm going to list soon for $50.
