idea for connecting a recovery strap

the other day i saw a product from warn that fits into the hitch receiver that allows you to connect a recovery strap to it. price - $45. it looked cool, but then i thought about it. what about taking the loop on the end of a hookless recover strap, feeding through the back of the hitch receiver, then simply put a standard receiver pin in to keep the strap in the receiver. does that make sense? anyone forsee any problems?

I dont know much about this kind of stuff, but would it be possible for the inside edge of the hitch to rub against and cut the strap? Especially if you were pulling at and angle.

Problem waiting to happen. You could potentially bend the pin and not be able to remove it. This makes for a permanent recovery strap.

i see your point, but what is the likelyhood of that happening? those pins are designed to hold pretty terrific loads, are they not?

good point about potentially cutting the strap as well, although that area of the strap is reinforced, and this would be more on an emergency basis rather than a long haul situation.

No the pin is not as strong is you think, the sheering force is right at the point where the receiver is hitting the hitch wall when pulling a trailer. When putting a strap in the force is placed on the center of the pin and because of the moment arm it creates it is much more likely to bend.

I have a Warn receiver shackle, and the receiver bracket is a solid piece of metal. It is not hollow like a typical ball mount.

Because it is solid, it is highly unlikely that a hitch pin could get bent once it is in place. The pin would be unable to "move" into a bent shape because it is fully supported/surrounded by the solid bracket.

The only minor glitch I had with my receiver shackle was that the pin would not go completely through the hole. There was a rough edge where the hole was drilled out. After a few minutes with a rattail file, it works great.

The scenario you envision likely would work in a pinch, but it is not the ideal set-up.

yeah, i have used just about every part of my vehicle as a pull point (when needed, not for fun) including just stuffing it in my tow hitch and putting the pin in it worked, a couple times, but i wouldnt do it if you have another option, i would get the shackle, or atleast tow hooks on the rear...

For $45 for a quality product from a quality company, why would you bother trying to shove a recovery strap inside the tow hitch?

I don't get why someone with a $30,000 truck wants to short on $45?

there are a zillion things to spend $45 on, including truck payments. if there are alternatives - why not try them?

unfortunately, this does not seem to be a recommended alternative.
