idle air control valve

Hey folks,
96 4cyclinder 2wd. 215000 miles.
I recently cleaned the iacv, but I'm still having some problems.
1. at start up, it struggles to start idling.
2. after it's warmed up, while in park, it idles at around 1100 rpms.

When I cleaned the valve, I did not put a new gasket in it.
Should I try a new gasket??
Will a gasket from a v6 engine work in a 4 cylinder???
I found the gasket at PartsGeek.com but it was listed for a v6 engine. Looks like the same one on my 4 cylinder.
Thanks in advance
Phil

u can either use the old or the new one if u want. the old one can be cleaned up. I used the new one, however i still have the same problem after cleaning the IAC and replacing the gasket. Still experiencing rough idles and sometimes struggle start ups

Yes I have a check engine light and I have cleaned the maf.
Advanced auto parts hooked the computer up and it said the catylytic converter or a 02 sensor.
Any help is appreciated

You need to find out the exact code......though from what you said it sounds like a P0420.

I had this exact problem when I cleaned my throttle body as well. I remedied the situation by completely removing the IAC from the throttle body, thoroughly cleaning it with a toothbrush, completely drying the IAC, and then testing the valve's operation by manual twisting the valve open and shut.(sometimes gunk gets built up in the valve that you can't see) That took care of my issues and a few other guys around here. Hope that helps!

I had a similar situation too..

but with mine though, the iac was so gunked out to the point where the car's rpm drops below 500 and dies..

I took it to the stealership and had them changed out the iac..

hope it helps..

Yes this all helps.
I will take off and clean it again. then try again before I spend the bucks on a new one. Fairly pricey for such a small part.
Again thanks for the help

My IACV was giving me high idle issues too, theres a magnet inside and controls the valve. Mine wasn't operating correctly so I swapped in a magnet from another one (from a 2nd gen) that was lying around. It works great now.

It's not difficult to replace so I figure if it continues, just do it. It's easier that way lol

I got my truck to idle again. I ended up pulling off the plastic intake tubing and gave a couple of squirts of MAF cleaner down the hole in front of the throttle plate. I left off the plastic intake tube and started the engine and it fired up and then died. I did that 3 times. What I was hoping is that the cleaner would dissolve the carbon and then suck it past the IAC valve letting it function again and close. I was right. After reconnecting the plastic intake tube it fired up and the idle dropped to 750. I didn't have to remove the IAC either. Don't flood the hole, just two quick shots of MAF cleaner should dissolve any crud.

The reason I used MAF cleaner is it doesn't leave a residue and is less aggressive than carb cleaner.

I hope this proves to be an easier fix for this problem than removing the throttle body.

My CEL came on. Code P0505 Idle Air Control System. I will take the advice of Mr. Coffee and spray it down the tube with MAF cleaner.

09 August 2012 Update: I sprayed maf cleaner on my MAF sensor, sprayed carb cleaner into the tb (Throttle Body) and later on cleared the codes using O'reilly's scan tool. The CEL came back on half a day later. I'll be removing the IAC Valve later on tomorrow morning. I plan on taking photos (for those 4 cyl. 4runner owners like myself) of the process. I'll be replacing this gasket:

'pancaked' between the bottom of the TB and the top of my IAC. Apparently, the IAC rarely breaks down and, not often, requires replacement, a Napa rep. told me over the phone. I have a second gasket I purchased and it will be 'pancaked' between the drivers' side of the throttle body and the intake runners that go into the top of my 2.7 liter. Neither Napa, nor autozone had this odd-shaped iac gasket, but O'reilly's did. Cost me $2.29.

Po505

Ok, I have a 96 4runner, Had a code Po300 and Po505, #1 injector was bad , replaced it. Removed throttle body, cleaned. Still have PO505. Checked throttle cortrol ohms 4.5 , checked IAC ohms, 4.2. checked all vaccum lines, no cracks. No other codes. Runs great, but idles at 1000-1100. where from here ???
:help:

Generally speaking my understanding was that the IAC going on its way out doesn't cause CEL codes.

Mine was sort of intermittently failing for 2 yeas before I replaced it and no codes ever.

I'm not saying it can't throw a code but just that many of the posts here about IAC issues don't involve a code being thrown.
