You nailed it.
I've owned both (Explorer and 4Runner). Not. Even. Close.

That's actually really funny as those things noted in the video are the exact reasons I picked the 4Runner. Compared to other vehicles in the same market segment it's actually low in the tech department it wasn't loaded with what I consider unnecessary and overly complicated electronics like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and power this that and everything else which IMHO is just more crap to break as the vehicle ages.

You could, in a sexist way, say this is targeted to women...but even then, my wife LOVES my '14, she is putting her coins together to get herself a used Limited soon. I brought it home, she looked at it and "i dont like it" has become "do you mind if..." as i watch her drive away.

Because, yeah, everybody wants to use their 'kick' to open the trunk...

and, yeah, everybody needs the seat to vibrate and the dash to beep when they forget to actually steer/drive the vehicle to keep it in their occupied lane...

My question would be why is Ford targeting 4Rnnrs in an ad like that anyway? Seems T4R shoppers arent the same as Explorer shoppers...we want trucks, they want big cars...nothing wrong with that, just the difference between people who want chocolate vs the people who want hard candy...IMHO

Just traded out of a 2014 Explorer Limited for a 2016 SR5 Premium...because:

1) Exhaust fumes that could not be stopped.
2) Torque steer that was maddening and unsafe at highway speeds
3) Electric steering system had multiple recalls
4) The Chicago plant build quality was at best poor
5) Horn beeped when engine on and driver left vehicle. This was infuriating everytime I'd stop for something...HONK!!!!!!
6) Gearing and torque combo made you have to mash the gas to get off the line from a dead stop
7) Ford's 3.5 has an internal water pump and a few too many anecdotes of people getting stranded with a wasted engine due to water pump leakage.
8) The recalls grate on you even if they don't involve your VIN number...
9) Started noticing a few too many shiny flakes in oil after oil change.
10) Noticed later that IIHS off set crash showed the steering wheel to be forced off to the driver's right side making driver miss airbag completely. lol..."just....a bit outside"...4runner not so much.

In some way I bet they know through some type of "competitive conquest" of other metric that 4runner is cutting into their sales.

I sacrificed a little interior room for a huge increase in reliability and durability getting out of the 2014 explorer.

That may be true. But when i was shopping SUVs, i looked at the Explorer, then after the 15 seconds of dream sequencing, i remembered i like vehicles that actually last past their warranty date, and aren't driven by moms and grandmoms. I want a 4WD system with gears, not a bunch of steel plates that link when you turn on a magnet. Youre telling me it drives like a truck, thats just fine, cuz i like trucks, and i dont like cars.

We own a 14 Limited, my MIL has a brand new 17 Limited. The fundamental problem with this add is that they're comparing it to the wrong Toyota. Should've targeted the Highlander, but even then it wouldn't be a great comparison.

I will say our 14 has 86k on it and is as tight as the 17 my MIL bought. Quality has come a long way with Ford. Resale is pretty strong, but nothing like a Yota. It's a much better fit for my wife and my MIL, but yeah... stupid marketing campaign.

Not to mention that a foot operated rear gate doesn't help when you're broken down on the side of the road. (again)

What ELSE does the Explorer have that the 4Runner does NOT have?
A reputation for being a piece of crap!

4Runner: Off-road capable
Exploder: Not

Ford has obviously have given up on ever making a decent off-road SUV, and have gone full-on soccer mom.

I enjoyed my '99 XLT quite a bit. That said, it was a solid rear axel truck and I don't have any intention of leaving the Toyota family at this point.

These are two different vehicle that are not even in the same class. I just came out of a 2004 Ford explorer(body on frame). It rode better than my 17' 4runner and seemed to have the same amount of power. What I did not like was the transmission. The transmission was junk. The sad thing is that my 4runner is not as comfortable or well planted in pothole filled roads. Most likely because the explorer has an IRS. I like my 2017 4runner, but if it wasn't for the off-road capability and resale I would be in a newer explorer sport with the 3.5 Ecoboost any day. I have rented a good many of them for extended periods and that vehicle is very quick, planted, smooth, and fun to drive.
