I'm going to Moab!

I got a wild hair the other day and decided to see if I could handle the logistics of doing the Easter Jeep Safari in March. Welp, today I booked the campsite so it looks like it's happening! If anyone has any tips I'd love go hear them.

Me, the fiance, and our 2 dogs are driving the 4th Gen from Chicago and spending a week in the Moab area with probably 3 days on the trails. If anyone wants to caravan, we're leaving Thursday March 17th.

Now I just need to get the rig trail-ready! Sliders..compressor...CB radio...front hitch....

Sounds like a blast. It will be crazy busy and crowded that week so be prepared for that. Otherwise, Moab is a blast and there is a bunch to see. If your 4runner is stock and you want to save it from damage, I would recommend reserving a UTV to explore some of the more challenging trails. They are street legal there so you can drive them all over Moab. Have fun!
 
My tip would be to go when it ISN'T the Easter Jeep Safari. Unless you like large crowds of people, vehicles, and waiting in long lines to drive a trail.

I'm going as well. If you don't mind me asking which campground did you find reservations still available at? I'm a Moab first timer- I've got a hotel reservation for the week but was thinking about camping part of the time to save some coin. Figured it was too late for any reserved camping and was just going to wilderness/desert camp. If anyone has any pointers for good places to camp please chime in! If I could get reservations to camp that would be great.
 
I got in at the KOA, they only had cabins left. The sand flats recreation area sounded cool, but has designated sites on a first come first serve. I'm a first timer as well. Where you coming from?

This. I'm local and I stay as far away from Moab as I can for a week before to a week after Easter.

Depends on how far from town you are willing to camp and the conditions you are prepared for. There will be plenty of available camping spots along lockhart basin or up in the La Salles, but depending on vehicle you may be hours away from town, or depending on camping gear, freezing. Number one priority for dispersed camping will be wind protection - it may be nice when you setup camp, but there will be 30-60mph sustained winds, later.

I understand the crowds, we're going for the experience and will be participating in the guided runs from rr4w club. Once I get the lay of the land maybe we'll be lucky enough to come back another time.

Yeah I hear ya I definitely wouldn't have planned it for the EJS week if I had a choice but I want to take my 16 year old son so spring break or summer are the only options. I work air conditioning and can't get time off in the summer so that's out. As bad luck has it his spring break coincides with EJS so we're just going to have to deal with it. I really like the idea of camping...waking up to the beautiful scenery of Moab would be awesome but sticking with my hotel reservation is probably the way to go for this trip. I would probably waste a full day trying to find a good place to camp unless I can get some very good/specific advice from some Moab veterans (hint hint).
So you recommend Lockhart Basin or the La Salles? Definitely would prefer to be as close to town as possible. I have to let my hotel know about a week in advance if I want to cancel my reservation. Figured I would wait till then and see how the weather is looking and get more feed back on camping locations. Was thinking it would be ideal to camp several days then stay at the hotel for a night then camp a couple days then back to the hotel for a night before heading home. Recommendations/tips/advice???
I'm not doing any of the guided runs.... Will be trying to stay away from the crowds lol :rolleyes:

I will be going a week early to hopefully find a nice camping spot out of the wind! Keep your hotel res.! You will sleep better after playing hard, and smell better with regular showers!

A couple options for camping that are near by are up Kane creek and area BFE. Kane creek will be warmer but likely more crowded. Area BFE will be colder but there fir sure would be a place there to camp. It's 20 mins from town, under the La Salles and makes for great sunsets. Yes there will be lots of jeeps. Fairly easy to avoid if you don't do the particular trails they are that day, which is easy since there are so many to choose from. Area BFE is private property but open to the public. They have a donation budda thing for good karma. I may be up for a day trip about that time.
 
I recommend Canyonlands for camping. Less people and more remote. Which I enjoyed also the Island in the sky is a fun drive. We stayed for 2 nights in Canyonlands and it was significantly better than our one night stay in Moab. My wife and I did a 2 week trip, and we both agreed with everyone else. Moab at times is nice to visit, but man it can be a real cluster to stay in. Also recommend the nachos at the Brewery they are amazing.

Good luck take pics and you will love it. . well maybe not the sand in every crevice of your vehicle and yourself, but it really was a blast to visit.
