I'm thinking about a 2.4L Turbo diesel engine swap

I'm thinking about a 2.4L Turbo diesel engine swap into my 1988 4runner. I think it would be pretty cool
How is the fuel economy and power?
I have given a lot of thought into doing this some time next year. I would think it would get better gas mileage and have more power than the 22RE.

Does anyone know any pros and cons in doing the swap?

I have wanted to do this for years and years..availability of parts in the US is the only thing that keeps me back.

I read you're rebuild very nice runner.I also sold a 95SR5 and purchased a 87.Fuel mileage and a diesel conversion in mind.From what I've read the 2l engines have head issues and parts are very expensive for these engines.The 1kz is suppose to be a great engine but are expensive and alot of wiring.They make a manual injector pump for them but they're very expensive also.There's a few VW conversions claiming mileage in the 30's running 32" tires.I have found complete engines for a thousand and they bolt up to the factory 5 speed using a Acme kit.Engine mounts would have to be fabbed up.Parts and performance mods are available.All that said some people are claiming high 20's for the 22re with head work,cam ,intake,and header on the LC engineering web page.Maybe some one will chime in with practical experience with these mods.

I think I am getting good fuel economy (about 20 MPG) right now, I need a GPS to be more accurate. I have 4.10 gears and 31 x10.5 tires and the truck came with 225-75-15 tires so, I know the Speedo is off.

I have the LC Engineering ceramic header and a K&N filter in the factory air box. I also have a performance exhaust too.
I have owned a few 22RE equipped Toyotas and this one has the most pep out of all of them.
I am very happy with the drive train and the performance I am getting, I was just thinking of having something unique like a Turbo Diesel.
