inexpensive lift

I am a new member but I have searched this sight dozens of times for information. The posts have been very helpful. Here is my question.

I have a 98 4runner limited. I've lifted the front end 1 1/2 inches. Now I want to lift the rear. My plan is to use spring spacers and 03 shocks. The 98 shocks are 12.5" compressed and 20" extended. The 03's are 14" compressed and 22.25 extended. Is this a good idea for a cheap lift?

I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer, so please be kind if this is a stupid idea.

Not to sure if those springs would work on a 98:ohwell: but I'm sure you could find a set of used springs in the classified section for a decent price to keep the cost down

He is using his stock springs with a spacer.

I would check around for some LC coils. I've found some 7 and 8 wraps for $40.

LC coils will be way too tall for a 1.5" lifted front.

I think your plan would work as long as the shocks have an eye/bolt end. If they have an eye/eye end then you need an adaptor in which case the adaptor would make the assembly too long.

Thanks for the responses.

You're right cj80Cruiser. I'm using my stock springs with spacers to get the lift. My concern was if the 03 shocks would work. They have the eye/bolt like the 98's, just 1 1/2" longer. I don't do any serious off-roading. The factory suspension will handle the playing that I do. I just wanted a little extra height. I appreciate the help.

I know I should put it in the classifieds but I just got a set of old man emu 891's to swap in for my 890's. pm me if you want a used set of 890's they pre settled and everything ...

Also I would spring it all the way, most used performance springs will only have 10 -20 thousand miles on them. I don't speak for everyone but I'm pretty sure a used stock spring with 100k on it probably rides like a used spring with 100 k on it. And all you changed is a spacer, you'll end up with a taller lethargic spring rate vs a stock lethargic spring rate. To quote 04rnr you get what you pay for.

From what ive read a couple people used fjcruiser springs front and rear for a small lift. I know for sure you can NOT use fjcruiser or 4th gen 4runner front shocks on our trucks but I believe the same people that used the fj springs used the fj rear shocks as well.

I know you're talking 4th gen 4runner here but I think all these are interchangeable. You would need to do some digging and googling to figure all that out.

Pretty sure that 4th gen rear shock will work for you though. Nothing wrong with running a spacer on your rear springs.

And post up pics when your done :thumb3:
