Initial reports in for Mich AT-2

Here it is. Two reports already.

What I gather are two things.

1) Contrary to some, not everyone posts rerpots on TireRack to praise a tire in justificaton of their purchase. One actually sees negative reports on BFG KO and Goodyear SA right off the bat. Some reports remain negative even with thousands of miles on the tires.

In this tire, two reports may mean nothing more than tow unhappy custmoers out of the potential many happy campers. But becuase the AT-2 are soo new, we won't know until years down the line. But it is disturbibng that we get unhappy campers right off the bat.

2) Soft sidewalls. Will that be the the new AT-2's Achilles' Heel? I can understand the pebble chucking, BFG is notorious for that, but soft sidewalls to the point of driving detriment?

The jury is definitely out, but It may be something to keep in mind.

Am i missing something...from what i can see, one review is negative and one is positive. One guys loves it...one guy hates it.

And as is typical of these consumer reviews, one review contradicts the other. One says that it is "dangerous on the interstates" while the other raves about it's on-road handling. And both reviewers drive similar vehicles! And come on, that negative review is just overflowing with exaggerations! Do you think that Michelin would make a tire that is "dangerous on the interstates" and "dry traction pitiful"?? That review somehow alerts my BS alarm!! Remember, according to CanadianDriver, these Michelin tires outperformed REVOs and Goodyear SA over most terrains, including on-road. So, these tires may not be the best, but certainly not as bad as this reviewer made it out to be.:FOS:

The above link actually proves my point that these consumer reviews are extremely subjective and unfortunately, unreliable. You either get all raves or all negative with a lot of these reviews. Remember, there can be "trolls" who post negative reviews on certain tires too. And vice versa.

Too subjective to help you make a purchase IMHO. I would wait till TireRack does it's own tire comparisons...that would be a lot more trustworthy.

As Thai stated you have to take these reviews with a grain of salt. The second reviewer sounds like someone who did their research before buying and noted the load rating of the tires he got. Michelin states load range D and E have a third belt, which would provide the stiffness needed for heavier applications.

4 runner owners would be able to get load range E in 265/70/17 size.

Per my other thread, this is one tire in my consideration set with Yoko's and Revo's.

I went and looked and talked to two different Discount Tire managers about these tires. Both managers have only put them on a couple of vehicles but so far so good they said. Like the other reports, these guys said they heard nothing but good things about them from testing and the few customers that had them. One manager claimed that a guy ordered four sets and was putting them on all his trucks!!!

Personally I thought they looked pretty good in person, not as aggressive as I was hoping for but not bad either. The one manager claimed this was Michelin's first true a/t tire. Is that true?

Personally, i thought that the previous version of Michelin LTX AT was more aggressive-looking than the new version. But the previous version was severely outdated in technology and grip. Some felt that the previous version, although tough, did not handle that well on-road. I shared that opinion when i had it briefly on my 4runner.
