Inside Rooftop Fishing Rod Storage

I'm looking for a new way to store my rods. I have a rooftop rod carrier, but even with rod covers and rod socks things can get dusty.

I have two ideas.

1. Install a rear roll bar and use that, along with my clothes hanger to hold the rods overhead.

2. Install something like this: BoatBuckle Rod Bunk Vehicle Rod Carrier

Has anyone used this, or something like it before, and how did you install it into your third gen? Any pictures of installed systems like this would be helpful.

I've actually considered this, but after some thought this has some drawbacks to it. It's tough to keep 6-7 rods in a tube like that with reels on them, rigged up and ready to go without them clunking around in the tube. Even with rod socks and reel covers things can get ugly in a tube like that.

Another reason why I want them in the vehicle is also slightly for security. I would feel safer with my rods locked inside the truck than on the roof. It's one reason why I hate my current rooftop set up.

The roof racks will keep your rods safe. I use the Yakima ski racks. If you really want them inside the 4Runner you can buy these. I forget where I bought them online but I think I just googled "suction cup rod holders". It's been 2 years and the suction cups have not let loose once yet.

I'll be hauling roughly seven rods at a time. This looks perfect for what I need to keep them over head and take advantage of the full length of the truck. I have a few rods over seven feet so keeping them up out of the way is a must.

Do you have any more pictures of this and how you mounted it?

What did you use, the photo is sort of dark and it's hard to see exactly what you used to hold the rods up there.

Seconded, that is a great solution and I'd like more details on what you used and how you mounted it. That's exactly what I have been looking for! Nicely done.

Simple paracord and small cheap carabiner in front and paracord with a little locking tie down bought from home depot,i took inner roof panel off and found a area i tapped 1/4x20 and screwed in eye bolts from home depot.

Interior Fishing Rod ceiling rack

I made this fishing rod rack easily and cheaply. It holds the rods up real high against the headliner and the forward rod guides held in by magnets so I can remove the rack if one day I want to.

I cut a pole to an exact length and loosened one of the hooks and inserted it's end in the pole and fitted the other end of the pole firmly onto the other hook and simply reattached the hook. It's very sturdy. For the front rings I cut 2" gray pvc about 1" wide. I removed dome light and inserted 2" magnets with some epoxy on it so it would stick between the headliner and roof just to left and right of the light. Make sure and get your magnet attraction correct between the one on the rings and the one in the ceiling. They will naturally align. For the rings and magnets to headliner, screwed a 3/4" screw up through the pvc and set the donut shaped magnet on top with the screw in middle. I then used painters tape to seal around the magnet and poured clear epoxy over the screw and in the gap.

with the way the roof line slopes at the rear the rod butt really sits firm to the roof line and very little weight is on the front rings. For longer butt rods/offshore rods the rings can take the weight just fine. The 2 magnets really suck together. I sometimes use a velcro strap for the rods on the cross bar but usually not necessary.
