So I go to start my truck(88, 22re) the other morning. As soon as the engine turns over I hear a loud pop(maybe intake backfire) from the engine bay then my engine dies. I go ahead and give it another go. This time I give it a steady amount of throttle at what I'm guessing is around 1500-2000 RPMs as I do when Im warming it up. It stays running but the engine is really unsteady in an up and down pattern. If I let off the gas it stays running, idle is really shitty, even worse than when Im giving it gas.
There is a similar thread at the moment where Kid V describes this as a possible timing issue.
Had my engine completely rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago and have had nothing but problems with the work my mechanic did. Ive since switched to a much better mechanic that Im bringing it to in the morning. Beside this being a problem with my distributor could it be the timing chain? This happened once before and the backfire blew my intake off the throttle body, that time all i had to do was reattach the intake hose and it was "fixed". Just thought I would post here even though my new mechanic will probably figure it out in the morning.
Thinking of having the new mechanic do a full inspection of the rebuild to make sure my old mechanic didn't just install a different used block which he thought was good but is actually ****ed. At what point and how would I get my money back from the old mechanic? It is under warranty but I have already brought it back about 10 times to have throttle, radiator, alternator, oil leaks from the timing cover and oil pan fixed. All of the above mentioned problems took numerous trips back to the bad mechanic to get fixed costing me time away from work and money. Has anyone here ever dealt with getting reimbursed by a mechanic or am I ****ed?
