Interesting article on Jalopnik

I usually frequent Jalopnik about as much as this site. They recently posted an article comparing a 3rd gen and a 5th gen. Wasn't that great of an article, but I figured somebody would be interested.

That's pretty much a lot of Gawker-oops I mean Jalopnik articles. Over the last two years it has gotten more and more like people just posting blogs instead of real writing. Lanesplitter was really good until they sh!tcanned Sean McDonald, seems like the websites of my internet youth are fading lately (I'm looking at you too, Cracked!)

I still prefer the 3rd gen. I notice the guys who don't like the article have 4th and 5th gens. I much prefer to drive my 3rd gen over my 4th. I think the 4th & 5th gens are bloated. I can't stand the gaps in the front of the 5th. Why did they change the 4WD floor shifter out for a stupid dial on the dash? If I need a new vehicle tomorrow I guess I'd get a 5th. Sigh.

Having driven a Jeep XJ and a JK before getting my 5th Gen, I definitely see where you are coming from with them seeming bloated. That said, I like the extra space inside too.

Of course, mine has a lever shifter for 4WD, I could never go to a knob on the dash for that. :reddance:

Which is amusing in that all the shift lever does is activate an electronic ADD actuator anyway...

On the other hand, on my Wrangler the lever comes with the satisfying "clunk" of physically engaging gears. I think that is what people really want is a manually engaging transfer case. :der:

Yes. If I have to have an electronically actuated case, it can be a lever or a dial or button and makes no difference. I prefer a case with a mechanical linkage.

But I'm also 74 years old and think all you little shits need to get off my lawn.

Yeah I definitely like the feel of the 4wd shifter on my '01 when I shift into 4low.

The manual shifter on the 5th gen 4Runner moves the forks to engage the transfer case. The front axles are "locked" to the diff with the ADD.

Which is amusing in that all the shift lever does is activate an electronic ADD actuator anyway...

If you don't get out and lock your hubs, there is an actuator on the front diff/axle on your truck, too.
