1990 T4r. 4x4

With summer coming on beginning to get enthusiastic about reconditioning the interior. In the cargo area there are scratch marks so thought I would lightly sand and paint to match as close as possible. Before taking interior pieces and try matching colors curious if it's possible to determine from the VIN; if so, can the reference paint numbers be translated to a particular color. Finding 'grey' comes in a variety of different shades; recently purchased grey interior door handle only to find it's the wrong shade of grey?

Appreciate recommendations/suggestions regarding color, and/or brand. For example, recently used SEM classic coat to paint leather accessories for my 65 Ford truck and very pleased with the results.

Honestly with all the fade you will have a hard time getting paint to match anything in the truck. If you have a part that has the color better intact you can bring it to a paint shop and they can use a color spectrometer on it and get a mix color that should be close, as far having it in spray form you may need to buy a small air powered sprayer for the project.

I do have a couple of automotive paint guns and compressor. Only looking a coming up with a couple shades of grey and although it has been awhile since last searched for automotive paint supplier intend doing so today.

Greatly appreciate the suggestion!

I'm pretty sure the dark gray in the 1990 is the same as the 1st gen 4Runner gray.

I used SEM Classic Coat 17013 Zuea Midnight Black for the dark gray. It's slightly darker than the original, but generally hard to tell the difference. Ford color, actually.

Use SEM Soap, SEM Sand Free, then the Classic Coat paint for ABS plastic.

I'm just doing a second pass on my glove box because I thought it was ABS, but it was polypropylene. It all scraped off after it dried. :(

SEM made the old lighter Toyota gray. It's been discontinued, but you can still find it in stock. 17303 Blue Gray. That color was used in the 1st gen 4Runners for the roof cap color.

TBH, I think the Zuea black is as close to the dark gray plastic as the actual Toyota Blue Gray is to the lighter gray plastic. They're both a tiny bit off, but it's hard to gauge with weathering, yellowing, texture, etc.

Browsed Amazon and was unable to find a couple items mentioned so rather than piece meal thought it best to find a single source. I browsed cyber space and came across L & L Auto Supply SEM. Unfortunately, appears their online catalog lacks pic's and item description, just assume search under SEM, and product number should be same, comparing cost possible due to container size.

Life is good, I can not thank U's enough, intend purchasing all of the items mentioned!!
 
If you're just painting ABS, that's all you should need.

Maybe some of those gray 3M scuff pads. I use them along with the SEM Soap.

The SEM website has some process videos for Classic Coat, too. They show it on leather, but instead of using leather prep, you just soap, sand free, and paint ~3 light/med coats.

The sand free should be WET on the piece as you apply the color. You might have to spray one area with prep, then do the color. Back and forth until the first coat is laid.

Just use sand free under the first coat. Then wait 5m between coats.


If you have Carquest stores where you are, mine had SEM stuff in the back warehouse. Took them like 10m to grab it for me.

Placed the order. Intend comparing the products for similar/same color match and either go thru same source, or contact friend who owns local , but very small, CarQuest, usually only takes no more than a couple days.

Again, greatly appreciate the comments, particularly regarding ABS vs polypropylene.
 
+1 for SEM paints, used it on my '87's interior parts (in blue) and the color is fantastic, but also not exactly the same as stock. Nobody's really noticed though, and I have enough cans to shoot all the plastic interior parts so it looks perfect.

FYI, I shot my console and a few other pieces waaaaaayyyyyy back in '01 or '02, and the paint is still holding up very well with no cracking, flaking or peeling. I only used isopropyl alcohol to clean the parts before painting, and that has worked on several other car's interiors over the years, SEM paints are really good! Expensive, yes, but well worth the few extra bucks per can IMHO!
 
Waiting for the SEM products to arrive, yesterday finished prepping a few items for painting then rec'd T/C this a.m. from SEM source advising they could not locate the SEM17303, of course it's the color I need. Ran a search, of all places, O'Rielly auto parts claim they can get, not getting my hopes up; if not, its comparing the item to an SEM Classic Coat Lid??
 
Try some of the auto paint supply stores in your area too. I found mine in a small shop in Simi Valley, CA when I lived there, they had a full rack of every color in stock out on their sales floor. They can also tell you if there's something comparable if that colors no longer available.

A quick search shows West Coast auto paint in Watsonville, not sure if that's close enough to drive over, but a phone call would verify if they have it.
 
What would be the harm in just refinishing all the surfaces of the same color, at the same time, with an off the shelf color?

Does it have to be the exact color as factory? Then if it ever came time for a touch up.. It wouldnt be another hassle.

Btw, if you did get the color scanned and mixed, the paint can be aerosol canned for about $10/ea (if you dont have a spray gun setup).
 
Never been a fan of O'Rielly auto parts and after todays experience do not intend becoming one. T/C this a.m. sales person assured me the product was available however after traveling 25 miles found they did not run an availability search, now appears doubtful, they suggested I call them tomorrow to confirm.

Definitely intend checking into the Duplicolork, appreciate narrowing the choices down. Probly wait for the SEM products to arrive and decide what products I need to add to my shopping list?

Finally, as 'Bad Vision' noted I can take a non faded item and have it color matched, I would go this route as a last resort.

Info Purposes:
Not sure if common among NAPA stores, have not been successful finding replacement hardware online; happened to stop by local NAPA store where the sales person directly me to a binder containing clips, screws, fasteners, etc.; unfortunately by PN but I was able to compare to original, take P/N then ordered thru NAPA online.
 
I sprayed some panels yesterday ..

Just some flat finish off the shelf from Lowe's .

O'Reilly was a wash, rather than purchase items thru them drove 3 blocks and picked up a can of the Dupli-color HVP 111, charcoal grey at NAPA auto parts. Agree, appears to be a close match, IMO kinda flat on the color spectrum but thought I would try applying a coat of clear on the sample.

Unless member's offer have additional suggestions; going to try a can of the SEM 17013 out of curiosity and be done with it?

Not impressed with L &L Auto Supply as a SEM source, will look elsewhere with the next purchase.

I'm sure the dupli-color will do the job, not sure of the longetivity though, which is why most of us recommend the SEM paints, its what we have experience with.

Hopefully it works as well as the SEM for you, and if it does, definitely let us know! SEM is expensive and a pain in the butt to get for most of us (I too have to order from online stores), so having something that's easy to find over the counter is always good.

Waiting for the SEM products to arrive, majority of which are for prepping prior to painting, assume will help in using the Dupli-Color? Currently prepping the Cargo area, took a look at what would be required to remove the rear quarter panels, appeared too labor intensive for my liking so decided sand while installed using orbital sander w/ vac., started with 400 grit, and intend finishing w/ 600-800 grit before applying top coat. The cargo carpet is cleaning up quite nicely but for one reason or another there's some shrinking along the sides, may look into replacing just the section that set on the floor?

I rarely, if ever, post comments, pro or con, regarding a companies customer's service practices and I do not intend doing so; however, on May 25, places an order with company mentioned in 'post #5' and still waiting. Few days ago contacted them and spoke with employee who stated the staff member who deals with online orders is currently following a 'golf tour' and would not be back for 2-3 days. Contacted yesterday and spoke with same staff person inquiring as to the status of my order, told this person has not returned yet; surprisingly maintained my 'cool' but did let them know it is a sad commentary when a company can not delegate a function during another member's absence; still waiting? :noidea:

Anyhow, project just about complete using alternative products, does feel good to vent!!
