Just wanted to post a thank you to all the members who responded to my thread about anyone towing a boat out there. The amount of feedback I got was fantastic and really helped me select the right 4Runner. I wound up with a 2008 SR5 4x4 V8. Only options are CD player, value package with moonroof, roof rack, cruise, etc., rear spoiler, daytime running lights & floor mats. Other threads in the forum really helped me in the price negociation process too.
We took it for the first tow and I am glad I got the V8. Some of our hills in Arizona are 6-7% grade and 4-5 miles long. It handled everything like a champ. I have not had real need for the 4x4 yet but down the road sometime I think I will be glad I got it. Even the gas mileage was a little better than I expected. The boat I am towing is 3400 pounds with gear and fuel.
The only thing I don't like so far is the lack of stowage in the rear cargo compartment. The side stowage areas are too small and those little trays on top of the wheel wells are a joke. I like to carry around a small tool box, jumpers, emergency tow strap and the ball hitch. There just is no room for that stuff. Has anybody seen any after market storage boxes that would fit on top of the drivers side rear wheel well that you can throw junk in?
So far the only mod I have made is add a Husky liner to the rear compartment, they seem to work well. And I will be making some kind of homemade partitions to make sense out of the center console up front. I tried to post a small file size photo but I am not sure if I am having any luck.
