Investing more into 2010 or buy new/newer?

I've made small upgrades to my 2010. Fox shocks, C4 Fab sliders, SCS wheels, tires, gone through two roof racks, now loving my LFD full aluminum. I'm at 127,000 miles now and realize I'll probably have at least another 100,000 relatively trouble free miles.

I'm looking into upgrading the front bumper to a hidden winch style, possibly rear as well, roof rack, additional accessories etc.

I'm just trying to figure out if dumping more money into this 4runner is worth the cost of upgrades. The other problem I'm running into is the options for early 5th gen upgrades. Most vendors have better options for 2014+

The only advantage is I don't owe money on this and if it's scratched, dinged, dog hair, sand, dirt, etc. doesn't bother me. If I drop 45k+ on a newer one, I might care a little. Thoughts?

You can always take off someone the parts from your current 4runner and reuse them on the new one

Look up blue book on your 2010 and see if adding accessories gets your investment too high. Your insurance company might have a substantially different idea of it’s worth than you, should you be unfortunate enough to have it totaled or stolen. If you don’t care fine! ;-)

I was thinking the same thing. I would definitely keep my SCS wheels being they were a pain to actually purchase. Also, probably keep the rack and ladder. Bumpers would be tough...hard to sell my 4runner if I retrofitted the body.

Accessories don't hold their value much...except for a very small market. I could be wrong about that, though it seems to be the general rule regarding most things, but it is something to consider. I'm not sure about insurance though. Good point.

You could just do a 14+ front end conversion.

lets you run any lo-pro front end you want, slightly changes up the truck for a new look, and you can keep beating on ole' trusty

Read the 6th gen unicorn threads, dream about the 6th gen, you might regret buying a 2nd 5th. Can your deep pockets hold out a few more years?

I've read a bit about this. Certainly opens more options and cheaper. I really dig LFD's hybrid bumper.

That's just it...a newer one won't perform any better. I've been reading into the 6th gen thread. All speculation at this point, but it would be nice if Toyota came through with some performance improvements.

+1 on waiting for the 6th Gen.

Toyota has put a great revamp on just about every vehicle sold to this point. They might, next, shock the world, or at least the US market, and do a full revamp on the 4Runner next...offering a 6th Gen set up to fully battle Jeep, the new Bronco, or whatever...and then you can really think to drop $40+K on a vehicle that might be worth it.

It cant be said enough, as much as we love our 4Runners, the vehicle hasnt changed much since about 2009...so buying a new one just because of a nicer center screen and face seems a bit much, especially after youve made your current one your own.

Come back in about a year, see what Toyota is planning for 2022, then decide.

Absolutely this. I owned an '18 TRD ORP previously, and then decided to keep the wife's '12 for myself when she wanted a new vehicle. They are the same truck - not worth changing it up unless you've just got money to burn.

Keep your 2010. In all reality, it's the same vehicle with minor upgrades and not worth the extra $$$$ unless you absolutely want to get something with less miles and want to get back to making car payments. I myself wish I would have gone used and am contemplating trading my 2020 in on a used 2014-2015 4runner or GX460 in the next year or so.

The cost of upgrades are rarely worth it in terms of investment. On a new 4runner, you'll still deal with that plus other losses like depreciation which is significantly more on a new vehicle. You'll save more money long term by just modding your 2010 I would think.

if it were me, with my 2014 paid off, IF i were to ever look for a new(er) vehicle and be willing to take on car payments again, i'd just go balls deep and just use that trade in value of the T4R and get myself a LandCruiser 200. USED of course

I had a similar dilemma a year ago when I overhauled my suspension lift.

If it works and is paid off, it's still much cheaper than buying a new one AND overhauling it.

I went through the same thought process this Summer on my 2010 TE (137k miles). Other than the front end re-design in 2014, little has changed on the 4Runner. I ended up upgrading my suspension, adding SCS Ray 10 wheels, replacing my head unit with a T9 and adding ditch lights. This winter I'm planning on adding a bumper/winch, a light bar and upgrading the headlights.

I'll probably have about $5k in upgrades before I'm finished but plan on keeping my 4Runner for at least another 100k miles.

I'm in the same boat as you re. finding a bumper for a 2010 -2013. The only one that I've come across is this one from C4:

I replaced 10 year old shocks and struts on my GM JIMMY and it rode worse. Stick with your OEM unless they are really gone.

My 2005 4runner still rides great. Runs better. Now at 150000 miles in Nassau Bahamas where you remember where every pot hole is.:eyebrows:

I have a 2020. It has scratches, dings, damaged wheels from trail rocks, dog hair, dirt, etc. doesn't bother me one bit. That's life, I use it for what it was made for. It still gets me anywhere I please safely, and that's what I care about

Amen. I already have over 16000 miles on my 2020 and plenty of rock dings, some brush marks, plus just got my first battle scars dropping a ledge on Imogene Pass a week or so back with a crappy line (got a nice bumper scratch on the rear valance and smacked my big ole' TRD Pro exhaust tip plus bent the one recovery hook by the rear hitch a touch).

I'm happy I'm using it for what I wanted it for. If and when my bumpers get trashed, will just be an excuse to go aftermarket .

Depends on your plans.

4Runners depreciate very slowly but it really depends on whether you plan to keep or sell for a 6th Gen. I'm at the point with my 2012 where its trade in value is the same as my '17 VW Daily Driver.

I'm seriously considering trading the '12 and my VW in for a 2021 model and then flipping it over for a 6th gen if I like what I see.

Wait for the 6th gen then decide. My 2001 4Runner was almost 18 years old with 200k and I could have still been driving it.
