Is a 2 ton jack enought for my 4th Gen?

I just wanted to know anyone else's experience before I attempt to get underneath my truck. I was thinking about by this kit from Home Depot that comes with a 2 ton jack and jack stands, an impact wrench and some other air tools ... all for like $60.

I was going to use the jack and stands to install my lift kit, so I just want to make sure it will adequately support the truck.

According to Toyota's website, a Limited V8 4WD weighs 4,555 pounds, which is equal to 2.033 tons.

So do you think this will be safe to use or should I start looking into some life insurance?

I imagine the jack will be okay, but you might want to reconsider the jack stands if you're going to do suspension work. My old stands wouldn't cut it. I bought SUV stand from Walley World. They're taller and they do the trick.
 
You could get away with it but I wouldnt trust it if you were underneath the truck...I have used a 2 1/4 ton jack to change tires, thats about it...if you had it on the jack and the jack stand you would probably be safe but I would go with a 3 1/2 ton jack...I got a 3 1/2 ton jack from Costco ( Arcan ) for only $70....its a beast and so far its worked great
 
Additionally, NEVER get under a vehicle supported solely by a jack, always use jackstands.

For tire changes and other quick work, I put the stands in place, but don't fully load them (i.e. the vehicle is still on the jack).
 
I would recommend you got for the 3ton or more stuff. ALso look fro SUV Jacks and jack stands, which is a little higher than the normal ones.

Make sure the jack stands are also 3ton + rated. Once you put the weight of the 4Runner on them you will aprreciate the extra beefy stands.

I have 4ton jack stands if I remember correctly now and you can see when they hold up thefront end of the 4Runner. 2tons will be a little light weight, they will buckle a bit under the load (which I dont like at all).

Also as said above make sure you keep safety in mind. WHen I lift the 4RUnner I always put the weight on the jackstands and keep the jack in most of the time touching the jackpoint, but not holding the weight, just for extra safety.

Nothing like 4500lb on your chest, hope you went to gym a lot so you can bench it :D
 
I have three 6 ton jackstands and two 3 ton jackstands.

Never hurts to spend a few bucks more for that added insurance. It is your life we're talking about.

Don't forget, when you lift your truck to place your tires under the truck so if the jacks ever do fail, the truck will land on the tire and not on you. Just an added insurance.

I have a 5 ton floor jack that works great (except the dang thing weight an honest 100 pounds!).

My jack stands are 2 ton units. You usually don't have the full vehicle weight on your stands, but rather it should be distributed safely. (NOTE: I just said that is what I HAVE, not what I would suggest to GET!):D I would definetly go for heavier stands tho. Also something taller and with a wider base. I also use my ramps for whenever I have to get under it....I do NOT trust jackstands.

The cheap-o floor jacks work ok for tire changes. I like to keep one in the rig for just that (I don;t like to use bottle jacks out on the highway!). I almost wonder if it would just be better to get AAA for roadside flats and a HighLift for real jacking work (off-road. A big nasty-tough floor jack for garage/driveway work).

My preferance? A full-on lift! Just like in the shops! And a pit for oil changes.
 
Thanks gusy for all your input. Looks like I'ma heading back out to the shops to look for some meatier gear. If anyone as any suggestions or has found a good deal on some stuff, please let me know!
 
Pepboys had a set of Torin 3ton jack stands and a 3ton jack for $100. It also came with wheel chocks and some other things. I don't know if they still have it for that price.

I got the same one also! Damn thing weighs 98lbs, but solid. Another plus is the max height of the jack (I think it's 21" or so). I have two other 2-ton "trolley jacks" and they're a joke, max lift height is only 13"-14". I had to use wooden blocks (4x4s) to get the wheels off the ground to rotate the tires...not anymore! :D

good justification to keep a set of tires otherwise be disposed.
