is a dd 3rd gen for $4k in southeast realistic?

Unless i missed in your original post, you didn't mention if you were looking for 4wd or 2wd. That makes a huge difference in price. you can find a decent DD in 2wd for under 4K (and sometimes a southern truck) but not a decent southern rust free 4wd for that price unless you get really lucky. I've looked at hundreds listings (and dozens in person) for 3rd gens in and around chatt, atl, knox, birgminghan, ashville, etc and most all of the 4wd's come from maryland, IL, ohio, pa, mo, ny, etc, which means rust. I have 2 of them. Mostly good driving vehicles with average owner care inside and out, but very much a pain when swapping parts, doing maintenance due to rust. bolts will break or heads strip, even with days of pb blaster soaking. and if you don't want to do the maintenance yourself, shops want a ridiculous rate to do simple maintenance. For instance, one shop wanted $800 to fix the rusted parking brake mechanism and $230 to replace fuel filter. They simply don't want to deal with the rust.

I don't since I live in DC/NC. My well-off friends are making it to Tampa for the Championship game on Monday. Makes me ill..:puke:

Concerning the 2nd CL 4runner I'd ask the seller why there is a new radiator and cap installed. It does look quite nice; you may be able to get the seller down at least $1000.

Makes total sense...4 Runners fit what I use them for perfectly (Daily Driver/Hunting Vehicle. I am on my 3rd used one, and not one actually has died on it's own. 95 22RE/5sp w/200k Lit on fire by Gang Bangers, 95 3.0/Auto W/250k rolled and totaled, and the current 96 3.4/auto with 256K. I really like the 3rd gen for it's features 3.4 rear lift gate, and for ease of upgrading/replacing suspension parts.
 
4runner

i picked my latest rig up for 500... plus about 50 hours labor and a new engine :) might have helped it was bought from a friend. black 99 sr5 4wd. here in rust free AZ. similar trucks here on craigslist are 5k+ just have to keep an eye out!
 
Got mine in DC (not really southeast but live in SE Virginia). 2001 4X4 Limited w/ 180K for $4400. Had to toss extra cash at it for some repairs but well worth it.

Just watch out for rust when you're buying around here - it'll get ya.

I live in Columbia SC also and I bought my 01 Limited 2WD for $3200 locally. They can be had for a reasonable price, just have to hunt them down.
 
I got a 02 SR5 4x4

I purchased a 2002 SR5 4x4 with 142,000 for 5k here in Kentucky recently. I absolutely love it. The dealer was going to wholesale it cause it was so trashed on the interior. I told them I was interested and they got that thing pristine!!

Bought my mechanically pristine, one owner, dealer serviced '99 Limited with 184k on the clock for $6800 OTD. Besides plugs, NGK wires, a Kenwood Excelon H/U and some floor mats, it's been a low cost ride for over a year.
 
I live in the Columbia area too. You can get lucky and find one, but you have to be quick and have cash in hand. I bought a 2000 4 runner about 18 months ago for $4500 with 160,000 miles on it and it is 4wd. It has 183,000 miles on it now-but I may have to replace the motor due to the dreaded strawberry milkshake issue. Still trying to decide whether to try the engine swap myself or whether to find a local mechanic that will do it for a reasonable price.
My suggestion-if you do buy a used 3rd generation 4runner, replace the radiator as soon as possible or add an external transmission cooler. It can save you thousands.
 
PA?? The northeast is the wrong place to look for a 4runner. I was a mechanic in the NE for years. They use salt in PA. Likely the undercarriage is a mess. 4runners don't typically show rust on the exterior so u have to be careful.

I am trusting his word when he says he details undercarriage every year but of course going to look over when I get up there

he has owned for about 12-13 years and seems to have maintained it pretty well

- went through 10 pages of Kijiji ads, across Canada / only found 25 Gen3's
We envy the nice rust free down South - similar condition are rare finds, for us.
- around here...when the hunt turns up a real good 4Runner, got to snap it up quick

Agreed. My wife and I bought ours for $3500 with Just under 350k miles. I thought it was absurd, but we couldn't find anything less. The engine is actually in really good shape, no concerns about long trips and I did all the maintenance, and then some.
 
$3500 for one with 350,xxx miles? Wow. I'd love a few pics [MENTION=148230]Reinout[/MENTION] if you have the time to post them.

A fellow forum member in the PNW found a 2nd gen Supercharger for $500 up there but the deals must be few and far between.
