Is CB Radio Dead?

I know it works for the trail, but when not on the trail is there any current use for the old CB anymore?

I have one in a non-Toy but it does not see much action because it is so quiet. The occasional loony bin escapee rambling on about his "red panties and nickel" is all I hear (what ever the f*** that means).

It's kinda like the fax machine. So outdated and useless it's funny, yet some people still cling on...and I'm not picking on radio, I love radio, it's just AM on 11 meters is not a good combination for mobile use.

I think on some interstates there is still some useful trucker and frequent driver activity, and on a road trip several years ago I took to Michigan and back came in handy a few times to avoid traffic or simply find out why we were stopped dead with no reason in sight.

That said, with Waze being a thing now even that isn't as helpful as it was.

Personally I use my CB only for trail rides. Antenna comes off and the unit gets shoved under the seat otherwise.

Heck No Talk with friends from the area on Hill tops and use for traffic info every morning...

I was in a logging area last week, no cell service. Sign said CB was mandatory. Would have been a lot less stressful if I'd had one so I wouldn't have to worry about surprising a logging truck trying to go the opposite direction.

I had FRS and VHF radios with me too! Everything but what I needed.

Maybe I'll go the local truck stop and harass some truckers over the CB. That sounds like good 'ole small town entertainment right there.

I use my CB radio every day, we have good amount of chatter here in Omaha on a couple of channels still. It really comes alive when on the highway with truckers. I also have a wide band VHF/UHF mobile radio to monitor FRS and HAM comms. I think CB's definitely not what it used to be but it's far from dead. It's widely available, you get fairly good distance, it's cheap and fairly reliable. You can even talk with people in other states when the atmospheric conditions are just right.

The CB as gift I received for my pickup is getting a new antenna (also part of the gift) Maybe I will see better radio traffic with that. May have to drive to Omaha. LoL.
