Well the third light isnt a reflector though. At least I dont think it is. But my clear tails have reflectors. You can see them in the photo and they reflect light like crazy. So I dont know why it would make much difference. But whether you have to have red reflectors or not, probably the only time a cop would pull me over is if he were right behind me in the middle of the day. And even then I would only expect a warning.

Ok i went ahead and bought a set today off ebay so i think i will be alright as long as i have some of them bulb comdoms. Im just not sure what size fits the brake light bulb

No. I referred to the DOT and the FMVSS. DOT is the U.S. Department of Transportation. The FMVSS is the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regualtions which are mandated by the NHTSA under Title 49 of the United States Code.

In the US laws on vehicle lighting vary state by state, not US Federal law. For example in SC many people run vehicle lighting kits which are illegal in California (CA).

Yes, laws vary state to state. But in this case, No. Federal law mandates that a device which replaces the original lamps must meet the same requirements as the originals. State law can regulate lighting devices like Fog lights, spot lights, driving lights, state required emergency vehicle lamps....

So to answer the OPs question "Are They Legal?" No, they are not legal. The most obvious reason being that they lack red reflex reflectors. In fact any taillight sold or imported without proper DOT certification was done so illegally. This is where the term "Off-road only" comes in to play.

I never said he shouldn't install them. He could probably drive the rest of his life with them and never get a ticket. Except from the Fashion Police perhaps, those things are fugly IMO.
