Yes. To see them though removing the tire helps tremendously. By looking at the opening on the top of the caliper you can see how thick the material is with no disassembly of the brake.

CJ is right. In addition, look at the contact surface area on both sides of the rotors. If you see significant scoring or uneven surfaces, then a more in depth inspection could be warranted. Also, when looking at the brake pad edges, check to see if the two pads are wearing evenly, both side to side and top to bottom. If you see any significant variances, then a closer look is also suggested.
