Is this price crazy? 99 limited

First post here. In my shopping for a gen 3 or 4 4Runner the last few months, I've done a ton of reading here and think you guys have a really awesome forum. I wish my other car forums (classic Mustangs and Saturn's) were this quality!

I'm looking at a 99 Limited 4WD that is really in great condition. It has 47000 miles (which seems to be confirmed by the service records I found via the VIN and condition of the car) and is super clean. The seller is being firm on the price at $15000.

This is well over any appraisal I'm seeing online (KBB, Edmunds, NADA). About $5k really...

Even though there aren't a lot of miles, 14 year old coolant, transmission fluid, belts, hoses etc. will need to be replaced. I think the car has better value than blue book, but I cant get to $15k. Isnt this price crazy?

If you're thinking "it depends on the condition", let me tell you, the condition is practically mint...

Any strong opinions? Thanks in advance.

yes, that's ridiculously overpriced IMO. Even if it had a timing belt done and all new fluids, it'd still be on the high side. But again, we've gone through this time and time again, it's worth only what someone is willing to pay for it.
 
That's overpriced, but not as much as you think. The Toyota market in OR and WA is more expensive than the rest of the country. Partially due to demand, partially (I think) because our rigs are rust free and many have been dealer maintained because we have dealerships all over the place.

I'd bet that the seller gets at least $12k for that 4runner once he starts to negotiate. And unless someone has $15k burning a hole in their pocket for a 3rd Gen, he will eventually have to negotiate.
 
Yes its crazy.

You would be much much better off buying one from California, say the bay area for much less.

You can find a great 2000-2001 with < 100,000 miles for less than $10,000 and no rust, 4x4 Limited --- ALL.

Then take the extra 5 grand for the build. Between a build and maintenance you can easily spend $5k within first two years. At that point you would be all-in at $20k for this rig. Thats crazy.

Buy one for $10k with < 100k miles and go crazy.

Also if you buy this over priced rig and wreck it the next day your insurance will short change you.

The seller is just trying to take advantage of the market. These trucks sell for as little as $5k with < 120k miles in places like TX and the midwest.
 
At 14 years a lot will have deteriorated despite the low miles.

Pretty much ALL rubber is questionable ... LBJs, steering rack components ....

Please please get a compression check done if you decide to buy it. Before you pay ...
 
11K tops.

Be prepared to change many gaskets unless the owner gave it an Italian tune up at least once a month.

The price of replacement parts isn't getting any cheaper, especially OEM.
 
Like I said before ... These trucks can be found for < $5000 with everything you want and about 120,000 miles or less.

Look at this thread ... He paid about $4,000 for a 4WD 99 with 130k miles.

getting into the wheeling thing and wanting 4wd, and plus miles on the limited hit 230,000. i decided to see if i could find me a 4wd. been searching craigslist for about the past 3 months looking for something. came across a 99 sr5 with only 132,000 on the clock and he was asking 4,999. wheeled and dealed with him and got him down to 4,100 and drove it home that day.

the weekend came along and started to swap all my parst over and orded a 2" body lift and a diff drop. didnt come in untill yesterday so havent had time to install them. here is how she sits today!

X2. Unless you're willing to travel out of the PNW be ready for pony up the coin for a 4Runner with low miles and in good condition. I without a doubt over-payed for my Runner, but in Oregon, it was actually a great deal considering what had been popping up on CL in the previous months.

I would pass if I were you and be more inclined to service history on a Runner, rather than the mileage. 14 years old is 14 years old.

I think for 15K you would be better off buying a 2002 Sport in Southern Cal or some other rust free part of the country for like 6K and then plopping in a brand new or newly rebuilt 3.0 L 1KZ-TE turbo diesel engine with zero miles.

It definitely seems like the pacific northwest market is a bit higher than the rest of the country, but even taking that into consideration, this is not a deal. I'll keep looking and maybe make another offer in a few weeks if that truck is still sitting on the lot. The search continues!

I wouldn't buy it. I live in the PNW and I bought my 2nd gen 1994 4Runner for $3000 (about double as anywhere else) and I just bought my 1997 4Runner for $5500 (After he was asking $6800 which was a fairer price, but he didn't need it and just needed to get rid of it so I struck a deal) Morale of the story, wait for a better deal. It'll come around if you just wait.
 
Update for anyone who chimed in.

I checked back in on this truck when I was out at the dealership checking out another 4runner and watched it drive off the lot. Sold for $15k. Wow!

The hunt continues for me. The biggest turn off I'm seeing (in 4th gen trucks -03 -05) is rust in the engine compartment of a lot of these cars. Some of the clips/brackets that are holding cables and hoses are almost eaten through and then down on the frames and motor mounts. Its much more than surface rust...

I was not expecting that to be a big issue. Its a major red flag for me, am I making too much out of it?
 
That price is about double what I payed for mine 6 months ago. I live in Texas, and I got my rust-free, black, 97 4x4 limited with leather and a sunroof for $7300. It had 145,000 miles on it, but we all know the 3rd gen 4runners don't finish their break-in process until 200k :)

Find one with the elocker if you can. Some owners don't know the value of that little add-on.
 
Have you been looking at 405 Motors in Woodinville by any chance? They keep a pretty good inventory of T4R's in stock. Many from the East Coast (rustville) however.

It looks like they have a few 3rd gen Limited's with less than 100k for 10-13k and a couple SR5's with ~150k for $9k right now. Used Inventory: Browse used cars for sale | 405 Motors

They don't budge/haggle on price but when I was looking for a '99 4x4 Limited with rear locker last year it did'nt take long to convince myself the 12k they were asking for that rig with 86k (single owner, good maint, new t-belt) wasn't that bad.

That being said I know someone who just picked up a 2004 Limited with 110k in Redmond from a private seller for 12k too (still like mine better though!).

Rust to me typically means it was driven in/near saltwater a lot, or was not a PNW rig.

You guys fail to realize that markets are all different, and considering that the rig actually sold for $15k it was not overpriced at all. A 4runner in TX is worth less than a 4runner in WA. You should see our FJ/FZJ-80 market. It's even worse.
 
As stated, YES the price is crazy

I just want to second whoever brought up the Lower Ball Joints. Check them for any play because that can be a nightmare, trust me
 
He must be having seperation issues with that runner cuz theres no one in there right mind thats going to spend 15k on that. id say 9k tops. If i were in your position and was ready to put 15k out on a runner I'd get a 4th gen around the 100,000 mile range. Thats what 15k will get you
