Is the 6th gen waiting for this new platform?

5th gens are selling like crazy and sales are increasing every year. Why would Toyota spend $ on R&D to replace something that sells so well? I wouldn't be surprised if it's another 2-3 years before we see a 6th gen. I think it's silly that people are so hyped about the 6th gen either way. Change isn't always good. What if it gets the POS 6 speed auto and 3.5? Then people won't be so excited anymore!

The 4Runner, LX570, Landcruiser, Tacoma, and Tundra will all share the same platform when they are redesigned and released between 2021-2023. This isn’t surprising and will actually be outstanding. Can’t wait for the new 4Runner.

Edit- I’ve decided to add the DMs and a few more comments below. I asked him about the 4Runner redesign. This DM chain was in January before the announced changes for the 2020 4Runner. He was spot on about the 4Runner changes

Toyota's run is usually 10 years before a completely new generation. That means the current Turd gen will live until 2026. The Tundra is past due since it's the same since 07.

Not the same chassis. Same platform. Basically meaning they can all be manufactured on the same assembly line in any order. So all will be box frames that use some shared mounting points to fit on the tooling. Likely all will share things like dash internal fans and such.

Even the 4runner has 3 different frames. 4x4,2x4, and KDSS model have different frame part numbers. And the gx460 actually has a slightly shorter frame than a 4runner.

I do think it's likely they will all share common suspension design at a minimum. Probably the tacomas and 4runner become unified again. I was really surprised the 3rd gen taco didn't share the boxed frame and coil suspension if the 4runner. I think the next gen will.

That's my take. Common platform isn't going to mean common chassis.

The Entune bit was right and maybe about the TRD stuff if that side exit exhaust ends up being one, but there has been nothing to confirm the interior or front and rear fascia changes, unless you count the new gauge cluster for TSS, so "he was spot on" is a bit of a stretch at this time.

Look at the Jeep wrangler. Its looked the same for a long time just a few tweeks here and there. Might be what they are doing with the 4runner. they need change the darn headlights !!

Yes, this is more about "fitting" on same assembly line. This is the future of vehicle assembly. Eventually, you'll see ANY model car able to made on ANY assembly line. Toyota is the master of quick changeover processes. Plus, this allows plants to become more efficient and have the ability to react to markets. Traditionally, domestic auto makers lay off people or even close plants when the cras are not selling.
